There’s change afoot along the tracks near us: lots of construction work as the train tracks are expanded, a lot of trees are slated for removal. The good news? They budgeted for replanting, using natives, so hopefully that will all go smoothly. These big Monterey pines have lent an iconic backdrop for sunsets, but as many of you may know, they tend to fall apart after about 80-90 years.
Waterside Workshops is applying for grant money to do the replanting, which is another Berkeleyside story.
I’m not looking forward to all the noise and change but putting in new plantings will be cool to see. See link below for more info.

Random white bloom on a seed-grown Sisyrinchium bellum, Blue-eyed Grass. We’ve been seeing some cool random variegations and occasionally white flowers. What are your experiences with these ‘sports’ persisting?

Inhale deeply: it’s the citrus-y aroma of Wooly Blue Curls, Trichostema lanatum. We currently have six big ones in 5-gallons. $55/ea.
These like lots of space and sun and air circulation, and occasional deep watering, like a Summer Monsoon. Yay.

Bush Anemone, Carpenteria californica, having an excellent bloom at my place. Lightly fragrant, does awesome in dry shade or full sun on the coast.
We are expecting 5-gallons of this beauty and the varietal ‘Elizabeth’ tomorrow (Thursday)!
Prune back lightly, after the blooms fade for a compact shrub. Some grooming of old leaves may improve late summer looks, too.

Sacramento River Redbuds (Cercis occidentalis, sourced near the Sac State campus) from seed! We will have soooo many this winter!

We have a water chat tomorrow in which I will alert you to rebates, talk about water barrels (I will bring two: $20/ea!) and swales, etc. rain or shine, 1:00pm.

Restock on Dendromecon harfordii! We have lots of 5 gallons for $55 each. I also restocked the monardella “Russian River“ and standard Coyote Mint.
We have a few White Irises (‘Canyon Snow’) for easter blooms. We are open Easter Sunday usual hour so come by if you need a gift!

I’m back and enjoying the soggy start to the week! Thanks everyone who came in this past weekend! Enjoy your blooms!
I’ve been restocking our annual Lupines, and some perennial Lupines too (L. Polyphyllus). For bigger stuff, we have Fremontodendron ‘San Gabriel’ for $15/ea.
