Tree trunks should never be buried under mulch.
Mulch volcanoes trap moisture, rot the bark, and invite pests and fungus.

This December, keep mulch low and spread — not high and suffocating.

This is why chainsaws and climbing equipment shouldn't be available to the general public.
When a tree is severely over pruned, it usually leads to a slow death, and by that time the homeowner may never know what caused the tree to die.
I would actually like to know who did this, just to pick their brain.
