SolidWood Built

SolidWood Built Hi everyone! Just some pics of some of the things that I've built. Would like to build some more on a per order basis to help pay for my Home Depot habit.

Just now finished this. I built this potting bench for my mother 15+ years ago. Someone along the line decided to refinish it for her and covered up the beautiful western red cedar that I've bought specially for this.
I brought it back home a couple of months ago. I stripped it down to just parts, planned and resawed everything, sanded and put a durable semi-gloss log home finished on it.
It's in my office now. Probably be more of a shelf now, but it will be inside a warm house out of the weather. I've ordered a desk lamp for it since my office has very little light.

Finally finished for the second or third time. I originally built this table in high school, @1980. Clear heart redwood. Probably cost an arm and a leg to get now days if you can even find it. I know my dad had no business buying this nice of wood for a 15 yr old woodshop student!
All of the hardware is either stainless steel or weather resistant. Filled the "dog damage " with a marine grade clear penetrating epoxy. The finish is a very expensive ($120/gal) exterior log home finish.

So when everything is expensive, you use your wood scrap. I built this tablet holder from a rough, redwood deck board from my dad's house in Bodega Bay. Had to remove nails, and lots of trips through the planer to get rid of old saw cuts to get to the good wood. I guess you can polish a turd!

Look at what I found in a dumpster. Black walnut slabs 2"+ thick and 6'-8' long. Looks like they were cut with a 48" circular saw long ago. Not sure why someone would throw away this beautiful species of wood. I'm thinking a river table.

So I've had these offcuts from the redwood burl table I built awhile back. Hated to just throw them away. I think I came up with a good use for them. Picture holder or book end.

Not too much of a woodworking project but it's still cool. This is a Rival No 2 commercial apple peeler. It's patent is in 1889 so I figure it's at least 100 yrs old and has been in the Ohlson family just as long and was used at the family apple dryer at Annapolis.
Cleaned it up with oven cleaner and a pressure washer and then painted it. Made a base for it out of some of my red cedar scrap.
Yes it still works!

My driftwood clock is finished. A piece of redwood that floated in the ocean for God knows how long, and then in several barns for decades. Lots of character in the grain.

Once again, world's greatest uncle! Glad they like it!

This thing always looks so good when it's cleaned up. Washed it with Murphys Oil soap, dried it off with the leaf blower and air compressor, then wiped it down with some Tung oil.

This is a project that has been at least 50 yrs. In the making. This is a redwood slab that was cut in Sonoma County in the 60's. I remember tripping over them in my aunt Mary's barn as a kid. I had to cut a little bit of dry rot off. Planned it flat. It's still 2-3/4" thick. Sanded to 340 grit. Smooth as glass. The legs are an idea I saw on TV. They a just rough sawn redwood post from Home Depot. Planned, sanded and rounded the corners. The finish is Preserva Wood with no pigments. Even though it's all redwood, I figure the age of the wood is what makes the difference in the color. The legs should darken over time. Only God and mother nature can make wood with grain as beautiful as this slab.
