This absolutely stunning new Construction 24 x 24 freestanding garage with storage above, was recently completed for this fantastic family in Andover on the north Andover line. We’re really pleased that we were able to bring their vision to the life. Project used board and batten vinyl siding by certainty, Matthew brothers windows, lighting by Kichler and a 30 year GAF roof.

We are grateful for the number of families who have placed their trust in d.a.kinsella company to help design and build their Accessory Dwelling Units. It’s a privilege to be part of these conversations and to see firsthand how ADUs are becoming a meaningful tool in today’s housing landscape.

As we work through permitting one ourselves, it has prompted a broader question:
what role are ADUs ultimately intended to play?

They clearly contribute to the overall housing supply and offer flexibility for multigenerational living, downsizing, and rental income. At the same time, they don’t directly address the cost of purchasing a new single-family home, which remains out of reach for many families.

So we’re curious:

Are ADUs primarily a response to the housing shortage?

A way to create more diverse living arrangements?

A financial strategy for homeowners?

A municipal tool to strengthen the tax base?

Or a combination of all of these?

From our perspective, ADUs are adding important inventory—especially to the rental pool—but the conversation about long-term pathways to homeownership is still evolving.

We would value hearing how others are experiencing this in their communities—homeowners, planners, builders, and designers alike.

We have been working on accessory dwelling units (ADU) since the law went into effect in february twenty five in massachusetts. NH was quick to follow. We have 4 in design, 1 out to bid, 2 under construction and 1 we are bidding in MA and 2 in appeals in NH. I myself , i'm trying to get one approved for our home and have to go to appeals. I am not counting the advice I provide for one in tewksbury that was prepared by another architect and going to be constructed by another contractor. One of the things I would tell you if you are considering having 1, put on your home used to get a certified plot plan prepared. I would advise you to consider the increase in your taxes for because of the ADU. Make sure that you understand the amount of the investment we will need to make to construct an ADU. We have of course estimated several last year so we have costs available to share depending on the type of ADU freestanding, attached ,

We’ve been fortunate to be engaged in the renovation of four hotel properties — three in Massachusetts and one in New Jersey.

These projects range from interior upgrades and code compliance improvements to more substantial architectural scope. On one property, we are designing a lobby addition along with new fully accessible guest rooms that accommodate mobility-impaired, blind, and deaf guests.

Hospitality work demands careful coordination, phased construction planning, and a clear understanding of accessibility regulations. We are proud to support owners in modernizing their properties while improving inclusivity and guest experience.

Grateful for the continued trust in d.a.kinsella & company.
