Scale is an insect found on many of the trees in our area. When the protective covering is crushed (as shown here), it is a sign that live insects are still present beneath. Proper diagnosis helps ensure your tree gets the treatment it needs—and ONLY when it needs it. Just because the protective covering is present does NOT mean treatment is necessary. We recently treated this American Elm for insect and fungal pests. The blister like growths that you can see being rubbed off of the limbs are an insect known as scale. Many of the leaves were curled and full of aphid larvae, another insect pest. And finally, American Elms are susceptible to a fatal fungal infection known as "Dutch Elm Disease". We inject the tree with a preventative fungicide that remains in the tree's system for around 3 years, providing long lasting protection.

Billings is currently experiencing drought conditions due to a lack of winter snowpack and spring rain.

10–30% below normal precipitation heading into June means...

~Newly planted trees from the last 3 years should be watched closely for stress signs.
~Ash, maple, linden, and spruce may begin showing early leaf scorch or needle drop.
~Stressed trees are at an increased susceptibility to secondary insect and disease issues due to drought stress.

~Residence should consider implementing a deep-root watering program, mulch management, and soil health treatments to improve the vigor of their trees.
