This perennial plant is drought tolerant due to the long tap root. It thrives in dry to average conditions, full sun, and various soils typical of MT prairies and foothills.

To top it off, this plant has a long bloom time! Blooming from late spring into fall, it is also one of the larval host plants for the Silvery Checkerspot butterfly.

This specific perennial plant may be tough to guess! It’s from the Proven Winners’ “Native Roots” program. A native cultivar with enhanced traits like disease resistance, compactness, and longer bloom time while supporting local ecosystems. It’s a tough, pollinator-friendly “ironclad” perennial ideal for adding reliable late-season color with a nice structure and I’m very excited to see what it looks like in Canyon Creek Nursery’s new pollinator garden.

The Cotinus coggygria 'Velveteeny' (also registered as Cotsid or Cotsidh5) is a highly popular dwarf purple smokebush. Reaching only 3 to 4 feet in height and width, it offers all the dramatic deep burgundy foliage and airy, smoke-like pink blooms of standard smoke trees, but in a footprint that fits easily into small gardens or patio containers.
Requires full sun (at least 6 hours daily) to develop the best rich, maroon foliage.
Hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 8, making it highly capable of surviving the winters in the Billings, MT area.
Highly resistant to deer, drought, insects, and disease. For best results, prune in late winter to encourage bushy growth.
Leaves emerge deep burgundy in spring, turn to a rich reddish-purple in the summer, and finish with vibrant red and orange colors in the autumn.
Plus… they’re just so dang cute!!!!😁😳

It is low maintenance, well adapted to arid regions, and can withstand harsh conditions.
They attract butterflies like: Callippe Fritillary, Zerene Fritillary, and Woodland Skippers. Many native bee species are also attracted to the flowers, which appear in late summer through fall, making it a valuable resource.
