Response Design Architects, LLC

Response Design Architects, LLC Custom Residential and Commercial architecture. New construction and Remodel Who we are:
Response Design is a design company started by Josh and Coral Sayer.

Both are graduates of Montana State University School of Architecture with a wide range of experience on projects including high end residential, low income housing, education, medical, and historic preservation. Josh has worked in the construction industry for many years on commercial and residential job sites. That experience has given him the utmost respect for those who perform the work on si

te and a unique understanding of the value that contractors and sub-contractors bring to a project. Our Mission:
The name Response Design was generated from our belief that in order for a building to have significance it must respond its people, place, and time. First and foremost our mission is to provide the highest level of service. We want to get to know our clients and wrap the home around their distinct lifestyle. We aspire to create the client's notion of "home", not ours. In addition to the hopes and dreams our clients we draw our inspiration from the home's site. By responding to the movement of the sun, prevailing winds, and topography we create spaces that are comfortable and custom suited for their unique place and use.

Super fun project for us, furnishing our first Airbnb. We remodeled the kitchen and bathroom a couple years ago as a longer term rental and were able to come back and re-side the outside, build a new deck and decorate the place. A cute modern-country cottage nestled in a quiet street near the hospitals and MSU-B. Give us your name suggestions in the comments 😄

Timeless stone and oak create a classic backdrop to the place and memories your kids grow up with and call home.
A young large family who valued a walkable lifestyle near work downtown, across the street from the kids' school, and indoor-outdoor living, we were able to keep them in the historic neighborhood they loved with a new home that fit their needs. Wanting grandparents to be able to stay and play, this house was the first to take advantage of new zoning that allows for an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) or "mother-in-law apartment" above the garage connected to the home by a breezeway mudroom with a rooftop patio above. The entire compound wraps around an existing ash tree we were able to save. This kind of project with community values, a thoughtful artistic family, and interesting zoning conditions is the stuff Response Design lives for.

Timeless, classic details tie the new construction to the historic neighborhood while modern proportions keep things airy and light.

Interior shots to show the mix of open and closed in views. Open expanses of glass in the offset slider doors offer uninterrupted floor to ceiling views of the rock patios and a modern look. Big heaps of natural light pour into the house while the rocks provide the walled-in privacy of a courtyard.

Refuge and prospect is a psychological theory that humans feel most comfortable with both the ability to survey their surroundings and a feeling of safe protection. This house with it’s unusual site constraints is nestled directly into the boulders of the rims on its north side while its south exposure looks out unfurled to views of the city valley and mountains beyond. A ying and yang of closed in and wide open as you move through the house.

Working with Wellsbuilt we revamped an existing building on 27th St to create a classic timeless style for Montana Health Federal Credit Union’s new downtown location. We also worked on an interior buildout for their west end Shiloh location.

Our clients were looking for a more traditional European influence for their home in the Silverado development. We found it in a deep set stone entry, shutters on tall narrow windows and conservatory style bumpouts. Plenty of natural light, outdoor living space and a huge art studio bring it all up to the standards of modern living.
