Whether planting in beds, pots, or a hydroponics system, you're still likely buying plants.

When you buy plants, look at the clearance racks at major stores. Most nurseries make their money in separating and replanting flowers in larger containers. Box stores don't.

Just picked up 2 pots of variegated canna lilies for $5 each. Both pots had 7 independent plants that I can separate when I remove from pot. That makes my cost less than a dollar per plant for good sized plants.

Alternatively, if you only want 1 plant, look for the smallest one because it is least likely to be root bound in the pot.
