We don't always need an elaborate escape to reset the week's frustrations. Sometimes the simplest change of scenery does more good than a two-week holiday. Wandering the aisles of the local nursery, checking a plant tag with a cold drink in hand, just brings everything back to earth. It is the perfect time of year to see what's thriving locally and let the garden centre sort out your mood. *** There is a very specific peace that comes from walking among plants you aren't personally responsible for keeping alive yet. You get to admire perfectly grown Delphiniums and bushy pots of basil without worrying about the slugs or the watering schedule. It’s a pure, unadulterated shot of horticultural optimism. A lot of new gardeners go to the nursery with a rigid shopping list and a lot of unnecessary anxiety. They treat it like a chore rather than an experience, rushing to find exactly the right size shrub for a challenging patch of dry shade. Stop trying to find the perfect missing piece, and just take a lap to see what actually catches your eye. Plants want to grow, and mostly, they want you to relax about the process. The habit of just looking is wildly underrated. It trains your eye to notice the changing season and what looks good alongside what. This weekend, take a quiet hour, grab a decent coffee, and just walk the rows at your nearest independent garden centre without a plan or a trowel.
