Caring for your trees - Part #3
WATERING
This is so important, especially now with Michigan being in a drought.
When the soil is dry below the surface of the mulch, it is time to water. Water trees at least once a week and more frequently during hot weather. Continue watering until mid-fall tapering off for lower temperatures that require less frequent watering. Do not spray hard water directly to the soil around the tree, this may cause the dirt to be washed off the roots.

Mulching

Mulch is simply organic matter applied to the base of the tree. It acts like a blanket to hold moisture, protect against hot and cold soil temperatures, and reduce grass and weeds. A 2โ€ to 4โ€ layer is ideal.

When placing mulch, care should be taken so the actual trunk of the tree is not covered. This may cause decay of the living bark at the base. A mulch-free area 1โ€ to 2โ€ wide at the base of the tree is sufficient to avoid moist bark conditions and prevent decay. Mulching allows air to reach the roots and reduces wind and water erosion of the soil.

CARING FOR YOUR TREES #1
Staking:
If you planted new trees, staking protects the roots from being moved and allows good stable root growth. Use 3-4 stakes around the tree that is tied off with rope that has rubber or tape on the part of the rope that is touching the tree. Stakes should stay in place for at least one year after planting.
