Spring ‘25 is here 🌺 🌼 and we’ve got some happy bees 🐝

Just a few fun updates. If you scroll back theough posts you’ll see some references.

The hive that surprisingly moved in last year is thriving. It smells like honey walking by the boxes. We plan to split that hive very soon.

The hive we moved in the middle of night was a very angry hive. Its temperament was just angry buzzing and would bother people working with them. We are not sad reporting that hive didn’t survive.

But good news is we got another hive started. This was a gracious gift due to the help Adam does at the school. The school now had three hives of its own!

We also have two sweet chickens laying eggs every day. Fresh eggs are delicious! We’ve got four more chicks coming home soon.

Chickens and bees are a great pairing to have at home!

Exciting news…. About 2 weeks after we cleaned up and closed, a new hive moved right on in to the boxes! We were watching them for a few weeks and then Adam opened up the hive. They seem happy and thriving! It doesn’t have a landing on the bottom so the bees come in and out between those two top boxes. As it gets warmer during the day, they beard on this side in the shade. It’s fascinating!! The bees are loving the clover in our yard and we often see the little things packing on the nectar. No mowing for us!

Adam will be at Grantswood on Monday helping the Kinders check on their two hives for the last time of the school year. Maybe they can sn**ch out a frame or more of 🍯 liquid gold.

Happy Spring! It’s been a busy few weeks in the bee world.
March 24- Mr Adam helped get a new hive set up at the school. They checked that the hive from last year is still doing well.

March 28- we hadn’t seen much activity from the bees at our house, and finally confirmed the bees didn’t survive. It’s heart breaking! There was uncapped honey in the frames, and dead bees below. We didn’t seee any mites or sign of disease. So then it’s just guessing, freeze? Chemicals from neighboring yards? Smoke from a nearby fire that was clearing land? We don’t really know. We cleaned up our yard and will see if we can split a nearby hive or just get new early in 2025. We’re not giving up!

April 5- we got to photograph the kindergarteners at school checking on the hives and the had some second graders learning with them! The teachers and students did so well, I’m really proud! They stay calm, work together, wait their turn, and the bees respond well to them!

What a day! Mrs Jan and Mr Adam helped our kindergarten friends in Mrs Riley’s class, AND new third grade friends from Mrs Wall’s class. The students got to see bees in an observation box in the classroom. They got to taste fresh honey. They got to watch the honey spin out in the extractor. And then they suited up to help put frames back in the hive box! 🐝 🍯 💛

We’re heading into winter. The bees will be fed sugar water to help make it through the dormant plant season. We’re hoping to keep the hives healthy and growing to get more established.

Mr. Adam is at it again joining with Mrs. Riley and her Kindergarten class to learn about bees 🐝 💛🖤🤍
