In this design, there are no vertical boards; instead, the rails between the posts are replaced with wide boards. Because of the wide spacing between the boards, these fences provide no privacy, but they form an effective barrier along a boundary. They are often used to contain livestock because they are more attractive and safer than barbed wire or metal fences.

A Solid, or Privacy Fence, has pickets butted against each other so that there is no gap between them, and thus no sight line through the fence. If the fence is high enough to extend above eye level, this design provides a high level of privacy and security. The disadvantage of a privacy fence is that because there is no space between pickets through which air can flow, the fence catches wind and is more likely than a picket fence to be damaged in windy areas.

Board on Board fence is also called "shadow box fence". It is a type of picket fence that finds a compromise between traditional picket fences and privacy fences. In this design, two rows of pickets, one on each side of the horizontal fence rails, are staggered so that one row of pickets fills the spaces in the other row. There is no direct line of sight through the fence, but a viewer who looks at the fence from an angle is able to see between the rows of pickets. The space between the rows allows air to flow through the fence, making it better suited than a simple privacy fence to windy locales.
