To Liz, who is currently at Bartle. Please message me. I have something for you.

We would like to thank all of you who came out Friday and Saturday. It was great to see old friends and make new ones. If there are plants you are interested in for next year please let me know as soon as possible. It is warm here at scout camp but I haven’t melted yet. Everyone try to stay cool and keep those plants well watered. If you haven’t planted them yet, keep them in the shade and baby them until it cools off. Have a great summer and if we can help please let me know. - Anne

Sometimes we grow plants for what they do during certain parts of the year and First Blush is one of these plants. This small Hosta not only has red petioles (stems) that extend into the leaf blade but also a thin red margin around the leaf, similar but much more dramatic than its parent ‘Beet Salad’. The most exciting thing about ‘First Blush’ is that in spring the leaf between the veins will start to “blush” red from the tip of the leaf down toward the base. This year at mom’s some of the plants were almost completely red/maroon. The leaves remain red until temperatures surpass 92 degrees, usually into June. The color should persist longer in Northern gardens. Per Bob Solberg the originator of this plant, it needs some strong light (full sun) to turn red. These plants were part of the surprise order we just got from Bob. So while they are not Originator Stock (OS). It is about as close as you can get.

New Hosta from Green Hill Hosta. Two are so new they are not in Hostalibrary.org

Cherry Cheesecake

NEW!!! (Solberg 2024)’ Upright, Medium. This is the one! I am constantly told that red petioles are pretty, but you cannot see them in the garden. Our newest yellow hosta has bright red petioles on very upright leaves that scream for attention. It also has red bracts and straight red scapes and of course the red is visible well into the top of the leaf. It is taller than its sibling, ‘Ruby Earrings’, and stands at attention. (Too new to be in Hosta Library)

Stranded on a Sandbar

NEW!!! (Solberg 2024) – Small. Variegated sport of ‘Lettuce Wrap’. Some hostas are just blessings from the lab. This variegated form of our small yellow hosta ‘Lettuce Wrap’ sports yellow margins that become creamy in summer. Like many light-margined yellow hostas the leaf center appears to be greener than its parent. It magically is also nice and vigorous here in the nursery. Part of our “Sports Bar” series, it is my small tribute to the passing of Jimmy Buffett. (Too new to be in Hosta Library)

Phoenix Feathers

Mature Size: 16"T x 35"W)
* Wavy yellow leaves held on red petioles.
* Petioles are held upright and the leaves arch downward.
* The red from the petioles does come into the base of the leaf.
* Holds the yellow color all season and actually becomes a darker gold color in late summer.
* Lavender flowers on red scapes in late summer.
Why Should I Grow It? Nice yellow leaves with red petioles. It's new!

What an amazing spring and early summer we have been having this year. Lots of rain and cool temperatures, what more could a hosta want?

Scout camp is almost over, after lots of rain, hail, wind and storms we are all ready to be back in our own beds. But overall we have had a great time. Thank you to everyone who shopped and supported us last year, know that you helped send some of these kids to camp and are helping to create experiences of a lifetime.

Finally we got a huge surprise yesterday. Bob Solberg let us know 2 boxes of exciting plants will be arriving this Thursday. A couple of them are his latest introductions and are very cool. I will be posting the list of those plants later today.
