Section of a cottage in the Lowcountry. Considering how a small space can borrow from the surrounding landscape to provide more generosity to the interior.

Development image from a cabin on a pine farm. Thinking about the relationship between the interior and the landscape. A full length screened porch on the south mediates between the two providing shade and insect protection for the interior while allowing a wide view from the living and dining spaces to the landscape. The landscape helps to reestablish a heterogenous mix in a homogenous territory.

Thinking about how the experience of approaching the homes might reinforce the primacy of the live oaks on the site.

Images from a tabby ruin on Daufuskie Island.
The following text from a nearby historical marker describes this local material:
"Tabby, a North African building tradition, was introduced to this country by the Spanish at St. Augustine in the 1600's. It became a common building material along the coast from northern Florida to southern South Carolina in the 18th and 19th centuries...tabby consists of equal parts of sand, lime from burnt shell, and whole shells mixed with water. The shells came from ancient Indian middens, or refuse heaps. Shells from marshes could not be used because of their high salt content."

Site plan for a collection of cottages in the lowcountry. A boardwalk provides access to each cottage and minimizes impermeable surface area. Native landscaping helps encourage the continuation of the existing ecosystem and is specifically selected to help filter surface water as it makes its way toward a creek to the east.

Conceptual drawing for an addition on Hilton Head Island. The tabby base anchors the building and frames the landscape. The timber roof structure and floor lend some warmth to the interior and define the kitchen, living, and dining areas. Also, thinking about the garden as a mirror of the interior here. The live oak adjacent to the interior rooms has potential for a shaded garden room.

Image from a design study for a house on a timber farm. A boardwalk over a small creek serves as entry to the house. The site allows the building to tie the successionary landscape to the maturing pines.
