We’ve been experiencing a lot of heavy rain and strong winds, and I came home last night to some very drenched silkies and tomatoes and peppers that were almost uprooted and fallen over. Even though I had my tomatoes staked, we knew they needed more support to keep standing strong. So we had to put our Plan B into action and set up some twine for added support for some of the branches and the airflow.
I know many people will ask why don’t you just use cattle panel? And yes, that would be great for sure, but for some people if you’re on a tight budget, or as much as I’d love to use cattle panel trellises, we really try to work with what we already have on hand whenever possible because you usually have exactly what you need. We also change up our beds each year with different crops and layouts, so keeping things flexible works best for us. It’s much easier to pull down a few poles and some twine at the end of the season than rework cattle panels every year. Sometimes simple and practical wins for me.
& honestly… I’m just so proud of what we’re growing this year. Seeing these plants loaded with tomatoes reminds me that gardening is always about adapting day to day. Every season looks a little different, & sometimes the backup plan becomes exactly what you needed all along.
The hard work, the changes, the weather challenges, it all feels worth it when you can stand back and see it coming together.
