Working from home has its benefits …
This client’s home office gets used every day so we needed it to function better:
1. We closed off the left wall
2. Added stained wood French doors
3. Added custom built-in scaled for dual monitors
4. Used desk they owned
5. Purchased new lighting and rug
6. Added coordinating grasscloth for a textural, color drenched room

Navy Lane Design : 8 year anniversary!

Owning an interior design business wasn’t a life long goal… it kind of just happened! After 12 years working in residential design/construction, I needed to make a family-friendly career shift.

There’s a funny quote from Snoop Dog, “I want to thank me for being me.” Honestly, I am very thankful for my intuition … I’m glad I trusted myself to quit my job and start Navy Lane Design.

My husband didn’t get much of choice in the decision to start my business. He was traveling a lot for work and I just needed more flexibility with my work hours and expectations. I’m thankful he’s so easy going!

I’m very thankful for those first clients who trusted me with their homes. They poured so much wisdom into my life… such wonderful, inspiring people! When people ask me what I’m working on, I always tell them that I have the best clients!! Yes, the houses are cool but the people are fun, too!

I love my job!! Mother’s Day was my 8 year work anniversary!

Why do interior designers need extra phone storage?!? We take photos of everything!! I’ve never left a on-site meeting and thought I took too many… but I have gotten home and wished I would have taken more! Some photos are inspiration, some are measurements and some are just good to help my memory!

When I first shared my 2nd floor addition, several designers and businesses reposted the photos. While most were complimentary, it was surprising for me to see some of the negative comments.

I’m not an architect but drew the best look I could figure out without changing the footprint of my house. I wanted to somewhat blend into my neighborhood and give my house a little personality. Today, I can laugh at the “gross” comment because while someone may think that about our addition, we absolutely love it and we are the ones who get to live here!!

I joined social media to share some of my design projects and the day-to-day life as a self-employed interior designer. I’m here for fun and connection… like the true goal of social media (before advertising and influencers took over!)

Just trust me…
So thankful my husband trusted that I could pull off such a large project in my own. We had a rental house for only 6 months and moved in right before 2020. The extra 1800sqft meant we were no longer house hunting & every day I’m thankful for the extra space!

This week I was working on a project that reminded me of my renovation. They LOVE their location in East Grand Rapids but want a little more space and some “wow” to their ranch home. I can just imagine them 5 years from now being thankful for taking the risk… it’s so worth it. I love my job!!
