Should your dog swim in your pool?

We get it, watching your dog jump in on a hot Florida day is the best! But your pool wasn’t made for dogs. One swim can bring in more dirt and germs than many people swimming. Here’s what happens:

Bacteria: Dogs walk on grass and dirt, and they don’t shower before swimming. Their paws and fur bring germs into the water, and your chlorine has to work much harder.

Phosphates: Dirt, saliva, flea treatments and dog shampoo add phosphates. Phosphates feed algae, so your pool can turn green even with chlorine.

Fur: Dog hair clogs your skimmer basket, pump basket and filter. It’s hard to clean out and can even wrap around the pump.

Bad circulation: With clogged baskets and filters, water can’t move well. The pump works harder, chemicals don’t mix, and your equipment wears out sooner.

If your dog still swims:
Brush your dog first to remove loose hair
Rinse your dog before and after (it’s good for their skin too!)
Empty the baskets right after
Check your chlorine after every swim
Clean your filter more often

Want your pool equipment to last longer? Keep the equipment pad clean!

A few simple habits can add years to your pump, filter, and heater:

Blow the leaves away. When you or your landscaper do the yard, ask them to blow leaves and debris away from the pump, filter, and heater, not into them.

Keep equipment raised. Your pump should sit on a concrete pad at least 4 inches high. Equipment sitting low near the ground takes in rainwater and dirt, and that shortens its life.

Redirect gutter water. Make sure water from your gutters drains away from the equipment area.

Trim the plants back. Keep bushes and vegetation away from your equipment, especially heaters and heat pumps. They need airflow to work right.

A little attention now saves you a costly repair later.

Fall Pool Care: Keep Debris Away From Your Pool

Fall means more leaves, branches, flowers, and debris around the pool.

A few simple things can help:

• Trim tree branches away from the pool
• Blow leaves and debris off the pool deck regularly
• Keep skimmer baskets clean
• Remove leaves before they build up in the water

Too much debris can clog the skimmer, restrict water flow, make the pump work harder, and reduce filtration. Leaves and organic debris can also add phosphates to the water and increase the chance of algae.

Keeping the deck and surrounding area clean helps your pool stay cleaner and can also help your pump and filtration equipment last longer.

Answer: Slightly downward, at about a 30-45° angle.

Here's why it matters:

Pointing jets down pushes water toward the bottom and creates a circular flow that helps push debris toward your main drain
It also helps mix water temperature top to bottom, so you don't get a warm layer on top and cold underneath
Better circulation = chemicals (chlorine, etc.) spread evenly instead of pooling in one area

Pointing them up can look nice for surface movement, but it does less for actual circulation and debris control.

Heavy rain can dilute chlorine, stabilizer, salt, and other important chemicals. Storms also carry leaves, dirt, fertilizer, and other contaminants into the water. Combined with Florida’s warm temperatures, this can quickly create the perfect conditions for algae.

After a storm, remove debris, empty the baskets, run the filtration system, and test the water before adding chemicals.
