Ring! Ring! Be Warned!

Many customers have asked me about the very popular Ring vs. an alarm service such as All Florida Alarms.

Both are great choices—and your decision will depend on your own needs and preferences. Ring is an Amazon line of products, best known for its video doorbell. It includes a Ring Alarm Security System, a DIY-installed system that includes a range of security and smart home features that can be bought a la cart.

All Florida Alarm Systems sells and installs Ring systems in addition to a wide range of other security and smart home features. It’s definitely a pricier option to have a professional system but worth it for the customer service, high quality monitoring and well-made equipment with a wide range of products.

There has been some publicity lately of ring front doorbells catching on fire! This is due to people installing them incorrectly.
(see https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/11/business/ring-doorbell-recall.html)

You must be cognisant of the installation instructions and using any special hardware that they provide. The ring front doorbell has a special screw that you put underneath the cover. It screws into the battery holding everything in place. The issue has been that people doing a little DIY have used the wrong screws and have screwed directly into the battery causing it to short out making it a fire hazard.

You should always know your own limitations and if attempting a DIY project, ensure that you are competent or hire someone who is licensed, insured and has the ability plus competency to do the job.

Sometimes it’s not worth saving a couple of dollars when it can cause/cost you a lot more.

The company, a subsidiary of Amazon, had to recall 350,000 doorbells following 23 reports of them catching fire.

Security, Safety and your Home Lighting

Having an alarm system is just one way to prevent would-be burglary attempts.

Other than adding aesthetic beauty to your home, your landscaping and outdoor lighting can be a useful tool to preventing burglary. Your landscaping enhances the value of your home, ease of entry (prevent missteps) and deters someone from getting near a well-lit house.

Clean Up
With wild shrubbery going untrimmed, you make it easier for burglars to find a hiding spot. Be sure to pay close particular attention to trimming points of entry.

Lighting
Lights, even if they provide very little light, can deter burglars from stalking your home. The first rule they need to abide by is not to be seen, so they will avoid the light. Motion-sensing floodlights are great to have installed to track any unknown or unwanted movement around your home. Providing lights around your points of entry can help your neighbors to notice any strange visitors as well.

Prickly Bushes
When you think of points of entry of your home, don’t forget to include the ground-floor windows. A great idea to get intruders thinking twice about entering your home are to plant bushes with thorns in front of those windows.

Noisy Landscape
Aside from getting caught by sight, no burglar wants to get caught by sound. Loose rocks and gravel can protect your home along walkways and around the house by blowing the burglar’s cover.

All these small design tactics may help keep you safe. Landscape changes along with a great alarm system is sure to give you peace of mind, keeping trouble at bay.

With everything going on in today’s world many people are looking to save money on their monthly bills. Some people are cancelling their home phone to save some money but you need to be cautious.

Every alarm has a backup battery that is there to keep the system good if your home or business loses power. The battery needs to be replaced every few years (usually 3-5 years) because on some systems without a good battery you may have an alarm when you lose power.
You can test if your battery is good by unplugging the transformer and seeing if the alarm remains okay when you trip it and your central station calls you or have your alarm company come out to test it. If it's been a long time since being replaced or If you have an older alarm system, the system doesn't check the battery periodically like the new alarms do.

Went to Orlando to the alarm association convention, so many new products that I can share with everyone and learnt a few things going on in the legislation. I did my part and voted in the general assembly keeping The Association strong and protecting everybody’s interest.

If you have an alarm system that is older than five years old you may be at risk of not being able to communicate with the central station if it should go into alarm. Most alarms are not compatible with any kind of VoIP phone systems, this includes but is not limited to Vonage, magicJack, Uverse et cetera.
So test your alarm periodically to be sure you are still connected with the monitoring service that you are paying for.
There are alternatives, please call if you have any questions.
