Senior Service Day...

Although most of us at Cultivar are seniors, this service day refers to the annual Boerne High School Senior Service Day. Thanks to a referral from our friends at Hill Country Family Services, we were the beneficiaries of the labors of nearly forty of Boerne’s best and brightest.

For nearly three hours, the kids labored under the direction of our regular volunteers. We had a lengthy list of objectives for the day, and almost all were completed handily. Their energy, their enthusiasm, and especially their young muscles, were a welcome addition to the garden.

Our main objective was the installation of the decomposed granite pathways in the new pollinator garden. This addition to Cultivar Farms is the brainchild of Bill and Louise Haney. After they transferred to Cultivar from Kronkowsky they set out almost immediately to design and install the garden. We’re grateful to them and to Thrivent Financial for their generous donation that enabled us to purchase the granite.

Six trays of brassicas are ready to set out in the garden. The gangly seedlings reaching for the sun show how cloudy the last weeks have been. They have enjoyed recent sunny days outside during the day to soak up the sun. With no more heat lamps on cool nights and a weak feeding of fish emulsion they should be ready for the real world by Tuesday.

Look what they did at the garden!
Shirley Smith and I adopted this garden in 2015. We have been blessed with many volunteers through the years. Michael Bell obtained a grant from Young Men's Service League last year that boosted the garden to what it is today. This morning they surprised us with this gracious re-naming.

There will be squash and watermelon on this fence gate. We will bag the fruit as it grows larger than the vine can support. Being up off the ground should give us fewer pests and pretty produce.
