Those streaks on your roof? Probably not stains.

When the pitch is too shallow for shingles, water doesn't shed the way it's supposed to. It runs slow. It lingers on the edges. When it evaporates, it leaves the dust and dirt behind, and you get those long pale streaks running down the slope.

So the streaks aren't a cosmetic issue. They're a tell. Something like "your roof isn't draining the way the manufacturer designed it to."

If you're seeing this on yours, it's worth a look before the next big rain.

A vent isn't always a vent.

Look at this roof. Box vent right next to an attic fan. Here's what happens when the fan kicks on. It pulls air out of the attic. Air rushes back in from the closest opening it can find. That closest opening? The box vent right beside it.

Now your "exhaust" vent is feeding the fan. The attic isn't actually venting, it's just looping the same hot air around in a circle.

When we install an attic fan, we pull the surrounding box vents off and patch them in. If you DIY one, make sure your fan isn't fighting your nearest passive vent.

Counter-intuitive, but really common.

The most expensive damage on your roof starts at the place you can't see.

Where two slopes meet, water concentrates into a single channel. That channel is called a valley. Underneath the shingles, there's a metal flashing that's supposed to handle that water and send it safely to the gutter.

When the flashing fails, and it does, especially on roofs over fifteen years old, the water doesn't go where it's supposed to. It finds its way under the shingles, into the underlayment, and eventually into your decking and walls.

By the time you see staining on a ceiling, the damage has been quietly spreading for months.

Free assessment across the Treasure Valley. We check every valley on every roof.

What do you see?

This is the kind of footage we record on every assessment. Layered shingle shadows from years of wear. Light striping where the granules wore off and the fiberglass started showing through. Two valleys converging into one gutter. A galvanization streak running from a vent. And up at the top, a vent that's missing entirely, blown off or sun-rotted.

If you're looking at your own roof in this clip, drop a comment and tell us what you notice.

This roof is the reminder of why a proper install matters.

Fall hits and leaves pile up on your roof. If they don't get cleared before the winter moves in, they don't just sit there. They compost. They turn to dirt. That dirt mixes with the granules shedding off your shingles, and now you've got what's basically a natural water dam sitting on the roof.

Then the cold comes. Instead of running off, water gets held against your shingles. Freeze-thaw takes over. Any gap in your install, water finds it, freezes, expands, and pushes it open a little wider. When it thaws, the gap stays. Next freeze it opens more. That's how a small detail turns into a leak.

It happens in the valleys most of all. Valleys collect the leaves, the sediment, the dirt, and then they hold the moisture. That's where the damage starts.

If your roof's valleys are holding leaves or dirt right now, it's worth a look. Free No-BS roof assessments across the Treasure Valley.

Water cuts canyons over thousands of years.

It cuts roofs in twenty.

Same physics. Same patterns. Just a different timeframe. Every storm, every season, water finds the lowest path and runs it again. Granule by granule, the protection wears thinner. The path gets deeper. The roof gets older faster than you'd think.

Heavy wind and rain accelerates the process. And this spring has been a wild one.

Free assessment across the Treasure Valley. We climb up, document what we see, and tell you where you actually stand.

Idaho doesn't get hurricanes. We get wind.

Three-day stretches at 50+ mph. Dust lifting off the foothills. Trees bent sideways for an entire afternoon. Same physics as hurricane wind, just spread out over a long weekend instead of a few hours.

Our roofs out here work for it. If yours has been getting noisy lately, that's probably why. We're happy to come take a look once it calms down.
