Water doesn't just fall on your roof. It travels across it.

And it always finds the same paths. Over the ridge, down the slopes, into the valleys where two roof planes meet. By the time it gets to your gutter, every drop that landed on the upper roof has been concentrated into a single stream.

That's why valleys, eaves, and flashing intersections wear out first. They're the choke points. They handle most of the water, year after year, storm after storm.

Eight years in. This is what healthy looks like.

Minimal granule loss. Color still even across the field. No bare spots, no exposed fiberglass on the edges. Normal Idaho wear.

Not every older roof is a problem. Sometimes the answer on the assessment is "you've still got plenty of life left in this one." That's worth saying out loud.

Why does a small roof repair cost what it does?

Anytime we lift an old shingle to slide a new one in, there's a real chance the old one cracks. Older shingles get brittle. They don't bend the way they used to. So we buy extra material every time, just in case we crack a few during the work.

The earlier you catch a repair, the easier it goes. Younger shingles bend, older ones break. Same job, different cost depending on the age of the roof.

If something's been bugging you up there, get it looked at while the shingles are still pliable.

This roof shouldn't have shingles on it.

The pitch on this section is 2.5 over 12. That means for every 12 inches of run, the roof rises 2.5 inches. Too shallow.

Shingle manufacturers spec their product for 4/12 and steeper. Below that, water doesn't shed fast enough and the warranty doesn't apply. The right material for this pitch is a rolled membrane, not architectural shingles.

If you've got a low-slope section on your home and it keeps giving you trouble, that's probably why. Worth knowing before you spend on another shingle repair.

What you see from the street is about 10% of your roof.

The other 90% is doing all the work. Decking that absorbs and sheds water. Underlayment that catches what the shingles miss. Flashing at every intersection. Valleys that move volume. Attic ventilation that stops moisture from cooking your shingles from the inside.

When a roofer quotes "shingles only," that's the 10%. When we quote a job, we look at all of it.

Roof vent types, ranked from best to least best.

1. Attic fan. Active ventilation, kicks on with a thermostat or humidity sensor, moves the most air.
2. Whirlybird. Even a small breeze gets it spinning, way more airflow than a passive vent.
3. Ridge vent. Runs the whole peak of the roof, lots of net free area, no moving parts.
4. Box vent. The basic option. Works, just doesn't move much air on its own.

Picking the right one depends on attic size, roof shape, and whether the home already has soffit intake. We figure that part out on the assessment.

"Is your roof one layer or two?"

We ask homeowners this on the phone all the time. A lot of people don't know, and that's totally fair, nobody crawls up there to count.

Here's the easy check: peek at the rake edge (the edge that runs up the slope of the roof). If you see one row of granules, you've got one layer. If you can see another row of granules underneath, that's a second layer hiding under the top one.

Idaho code allows up to three layers. Two is fine, but it costs a bit more to remove when it's time to re-roof. Worth knowing before you get a quote.

This is what drip edge looks like when it's done right.

Peek under the shingle edge. The underlayment is sitting OVER the top of the drip edge, not under it. That's the part most homeowners never see and most roofers don't bother with.

Why it matters: if water ever gets under a shingle, it hits the underlayment, runs down across the drip edge, and goes into the gutter. Done backwards, that same water ends up behind your gutter and against the fascia.

Same materials. Different order. Different roof in 10 years.
