Be sure to have your older air conditioner serviced before the heat sets in for the summer. Lotta people dont know this but they have been phasing out the old refrigerant r22 for some10years now. The refrigerant Carrie's the oil that keeps the compressor lubricated. Which mean low refrigerant is like running your car without oil. Does catastrophic damage and drastically reduces service life in your air conditioner to run with low refrigerant levels. As well reduces your efficiency causing longer more frequent run times. Keeping the condenser's coil clean also improves efficiency and extends service life. R22 is very expensive sometimes over $100 a pound. Most typical systems can hold over 6lbs depending on refrigerant line length and tonage of your AC. The older Model air conditioners are expensive to repair once they break down. U can avoid costly repairs or even feel forced to replace upgrade the unit for approx $3500.00 keep in mind you have to change indoor evaporator coil usually consisting of pulling your furnace completely out and re setting the furnace on it's new evap coil. Ductwork, gas line modifications per code, electrical, venting, etc. Lot of labor involved in replacement upgrade. Most chose to have a new furnace installed at this time so there not paying labor twice when the furnace is the same age as the air conditioner being replaced. Winds up being a very expensive break down.
