Co-worker Bob Grundstad has started a new project in the shop - the restoration of a 6'3" Baldwin grand that has been sitting on its side waiting its turn for quite some time. Other than tearing it down with my son Jason, nothing has been done to it yet. Bob will do the works. Also, he's finishing the final steps on a Story and Clark upright restoration that will be up for sale soon. Bob has proven to be a great addition to the shop!

Picture this piano after restoration. If you can't visualize how it would look with a new finish, I invite you to check out my newly updated gallery of photos. It's been a couple years since I've added in any new photographs, and this vintage Chickering is one of the new additions to the collection of before and after pictures. Mornings in the shop are the best! Spending today finishing up the stringing and pinning of a 1905 Davenport & Treacy upright piano. When the original strings were installed in this piano, my father wouldn't be born for another year. Now, 111 years later, I'm doing it for just the second time. I wish that my dad, who taught me the trade, was here to enjoy the morning and the work with me.

This is a notification to my piano technician friends. I've begun work on a compilation of the "Small Shop, Big Result" series from the Piano Technician Journal, working from the original drafts which I sent to the editors. The series is now in its 86th monthly installment, making the project somewhat daunting, in I'm reformatting everything, one page at a time. The final product will run somewhere between 400 and 500 pages, and will contain nearly 1000 photographs.
The plan is to have my local printer do two versions, one double sided on ordinary computer paper, and the other single sided on card stock weight paper. Both versions would be put into 3-hole binders to make it easy to take out individual sections for use in the shop.
The reason for my doing this was two-fold. First of all, I think my 3 kids and 6 grandkids might have fun having their own copy. Secondly, I've been approached by a number of technicians the last few years who have wondered if this is something I might be willing to put together.
As long as I don't have to rush to get it done, I think it will be fun to do, and fun to have once completed.
I would invite any comments and suggestions. Also, if you would like to be put on a notification list, drop me a note and I'll keep you abreast of the progress, and let you know when copies are available and what the cost will be.

If your piano has a cracked soundboard, take heart. Usually it's not a big problem, but even if it is it can be fixed during a restoration or an overhaul while in the shop. Here is a quick look at the methods we employ here in our shop to repair cracks in a soundboard.

If you have a family heirloom piano which you would like to have refinished and / or restored contact us soon. Although we are totally booked for the 2016 shop season, we are taking reservations for the spring, summer and fall of 2017. Get on the list, and before you know it your piano will be in the shop for its special treatment. Vintage uprights are welcome here, by the way, as are consoles spinets and grands. Pump organs as well!

One thing I love about the piano repair / restoration business is that new challenges come along on a regular basis keeping things fresh. This week's challenge - duplicating a leg for a bench that came with only three. The 6 sided legs of the bench matches the legs of the piano, so simply replacing the entire bench is not what the owner prefers. Making a duplicate leg to match the existing three will be a fun project! Always something new!

Exceptionally nice Gulbransen 42" console with Mahogany case is now for sale in Boone by owner. Owner is moving to assisted living and must sell. This would be a really nice piano for the family with kids taking lessons. I've been tuning it on a regular basis since 1988, and with the exception of 5 small chips in the keytops (courtesy of a grandchild of the owner) there is no maintenance which needs to be done. Plays nice and sounds great. $750 or best offer. Contact me if interested and I'll pass your information along to the owner so that she might contact you. Comes with matching bench plus nice piano lamp.

Happy New Years! We are currently booked in for 2016 and are taking on no more projects. However,if you are interested in securing a spot for the 2017 season for refinishing / restoring a vintage upright or grand, contact me soon. FYI - we update our pricing schedule every 2 years (last done in 2014) and will be this month putting together a new schedule for 2016. If you would like to book a project for 2017 at 2014 pricing, contact me in January before the new prices go into effect - probably the first part of February. A 25% down payment will lock you in at the 2014 price level, and put you first in line on the 2017 calendar. (The down payment is refundable upon request up until the time that the piano is delivered to the shop.)

Now available in my shop for inspection - one of the nicest baby grands I've seen in my 42 years of piano work. This D.H. Baldwin grand (model C142) measures just 4' 8" from front to back, making it ideal for someone who has always wanted the luxury of a beautiful grand piano, but without the large space that a full-sized grand requires. This piano was originally purchased from Critchetts in 1993 by a family here in the Boone area. Retail price at that time was $10,492. It has been in one home ever since - the move to my shop being only the second time it's been transported. It plays great, sounds really, really nice and is in mint condition. Firm price is $3900 which will include delivery to any location in central Iowa, plus first in-home tuning. Purchase now for immediate delivery, or have it held for delivery closer to Christmas. Contact me at [email protected] if interested.

Closing in on reassembly of our Lester grand project. This is the stage of the process I like the most - when things are ready to start going back together. Last photo is of the piano when it arrived at the shop - painted black. Now a mahogany finish.

Took the 125 year-old reed organ I just finished for a spin. With foot pedals to pump but no sustain pedal these instruments take some getting used to. Very much fun to play, though.
