In case you missed it last week, we’ll be heading to the Western Vet Conference in Las Vegas later this month! We’ll be sharing projects and design considerations for veterinary spaces of all shapes and sizes.
Regardless of the type of equine facility, we recommend planning a space for veterinarians, farriers, and all equine health providers to work in. Depending on the size of your operations, this can be a separate building, a dedicated area within the barn, or a shared wash bay.
Some considerations for these spaces include:
▪️ Exterior Access ▪️ with nearby parking for veterinary and farrier vehicles. Providing covered space for vehicles makes working in all types of weather easier and safer.
▪️ Cross ties with Ample Surrounding Workspace ▪️ the amount of should also consider enough space for someone to hold a horse, if needed. Bonus points if the area also allows horses to view other horses, whether in a nearby stall, wash / groom bay, or just space to hold one of their buddies, to help them relax.
▪️ Nearby Storage Space ▪️ creates a dedicated space for equine health-related supplies, both for personal use and for providers.
▪️ Task Lighting ▪️ provides optimum lighting levels needed for careful and detailed work.
▪️ Non-slip Flooring ▪️ creates a safe and comfortable surface for everyone using the space.
▪️ Water and Power Sources ▪️ necessary for general use, equipment, cleaning, and on and on!
▪️ Air Movement and Exhaust ▪️ this is important for all indoor spaces, it’s especially critical for farrier-related work.
Providing a suitable space helps make everyone’s job easier, safer and more comfortable, which can foster more relaxation in horses needing care.
