In case you missed it last week, we’ll be heading to the Western Vet Conference in Las Vegas later this month! We’ll be sharing projects and design considerations for veterinary spaces of all shapes and sizes.

Regardless of the type of equine facility, we recommend planning a space for veterinarians, farriers, and all equine health providers to work in. Depending on the size of your operations, this can be a separate building, a dedicated area within the barn, or a shared wash bay.
Some considerations for these spaces include:
▪️ Exterior Access ▪️ with nearby parking for veterinary and farrier vehicles. Providing covered space for vehicles makes working in all types of weather easier and safer.
▪️ Cross ties with Ample Surrounding Workspace ▪️ the amount of should also consider enough space for someone to hold a horse, if needed. Bonus points if the area also allows horses to view other horses, whether in a nearby stall, wash / groom bay, or just space to hold one of their buddies, to help them relax.
▪️ Nearby Storage Space ▪️ creates a dedicated space for equine health-related supplies, both for personal use and for providers.
▪️ Task Lighting ▪️ provides optimum lighting levels needed for careful and detailed work.
▪️ Non-slip Flooring ▪️ creates a safe and comfortable surface for everyone using the space.
▪️ Water and Power Sources ▪️ necessary for general use, equipment, cleaning, and on and on!
▪️ Air Movement and Exhaust ▪️ this is important for all indoor spaces, it’s especially critical for farrier-related work.

Providing a suitable space helps make everyone’s job easier, safer and more comfortable, which can foster more relaxation in horses needing care.

We’ll be headed to the Western Vet Conference in Las Vegas later this month so stay tuned this month for features of veterinary projects of all shapes and sizes.

First up: the Ralph Rogan Equine Performance Evaluation Arena at Ohio State University. ❤️ Alongside Wellogy Design, we served as the equine specialty architect to provide the University with a space to facilitate world-class compassionate care. The arena itself offers multiple areas and various surfaces allows gait evaluations both in hand and under tack - yes, including over poles and small jumps! – to help clinicians pinpoint changes in horses’ gaits and better diagnose an issue without more invasive measures.

The facility, with a separate entrance from the main hospital, also includes client waiting and consultation areas with arena viewing, outpatient stalls, and exam and imaging area.

As a team of equestrians and architects, we take great pride in our projects that aid in the education of future veterinarians while enhancing diagnostics, expanding research, and supporting transformative veterinary care.

We’re in the process of developing a master plan with the City of Prescott for their historic Rodeo and Fairgrounds site. 🐂 🌟 🐎

To introduce the project and obtain input from the community, we’ll be working with the City to host several open meetings – the first is coming up on February 2nd! It will be an open-house format, allowing members of the community to come as they’re able to learn more about the project, help shape the master plan through improvements to infrastructure, event operations, and overall visitor experience, all while addressing impacts to the site’s surroundings.

Details of the meeting can be found at www.prescott-az.gov!

We always, always, always recommend exterior stall doors in pretty much every type of facility, for quite a few reasons:

1️⃣ Second Exit in an Emergency. Regardless of the type of emergency, having another way in and out of a stall can be lifesaving. Some states have even adopted building standards that require exterior doors at any stall located at an exterior wall!
2️⃣ Access to Turnouts. Whether it’s access to an individual stall run or larger turnout, providing horses with the choice to spend time inside or outside, as well as the option to move freely, has numerous physical and mental benefits.
3️⃣ Natural Light and Airflow. Exterior doors allow for a window and / or stall grille to facilitate a healthier, more welcoming environment for horses during their time spent in a stall.

And an unofficial 4️⃣ you couldn’t get photos like this without them 😉

We might be right in the middle of winter, but that means it’s the perfect time to showcase this picturesque boarding, training, and breeding facility in British Columbia. ⛰️❄️

Completed in 2011 and nestled on 75 acres in Pemberton Valley, we provided a master plan and full architectural services for this elite equestrian facility. The structures include a 16-stall main training barn, an indoor arena with a second story viewing area, a hay barn, an equipment barn, a round pen and walker, and a 3-stall quarantine/foaling barn to provide a well-rounded and flexible facility.

The entire facility was designed to maximize natural light and ventilation, ensuring a comfortable and healthy environment, for both horses and people, year round!

Over 15 years ago we provided conceptual design for a critical care wing addition to an existing veterinary hospital in Oklahoma, fulfilling a much-needed service for horses and foals requiring intensive medical and neonatal care. 🐎 🌟

The facility addressed all the technical and mechanical difficulties in the hospital’s previous arrangement and includes large mare-goal stalls, equipped with a full-view mesh divider that allows staff to safely provide neonatal care while allowing the mare to see and touch her foal through the mesh.

An area we recommend for nearly every type of equine facility? A specific space for veterinarians and farriers to work in!

Whether a separate building – which is shown here for a large-scale breeding and training facility - dedicated bay within the barn, or shared space with a wash bay, we detail these areas to provide:
🔸 exterior access for veterinary and farrier vehicles
🔸cross ties with ample surrounding workspace
🔸nearby storage space for supplies
🔸optimum task lighting levels
🔸non-slip flooring
🔸water sources
🔸air movement and exhaust

Providing space that’s suitable, for both equine healthcare providers and horses, helps make everyone’s job easier, safer, and more comfortable.
