Here's what psychology tells us: humans are wired to factor past investments into future decisions, even when those past investments are long gone. It's called the sunk cost fallacy, and it is responsible for more cluttered garages than any other force in the known universe.

The money is spent whether the item stays or goes. Keeping it doesn't recover a single dollar. It just costs you space — and energy! The item has already done its damage to your wallet. Don't let it do more!

Kitchen renovations aren't for the faint of heart! We helped this family set-up a temporary kitchen in their basement while the construction was going on. What is necessary in our homes? Our family members (and our pets!) What primary purpose do our homes serve? A safe place to sleep, to rest and relax, to enjoy and to play, to cook meals for ourselves... for some of us, our home is where we work and where we exercise. The objects in our homes serve one primary function: to support these activities. The things we have that do not support us in living are not only unnecessary; they distract us from what we really want to be doing: enjoying ourselves and living a full and meaningful life.
