Finegold Alexander Architects has been designing public libraries in Massachusetts for more than 55 years. From one of our first projects at the Avon Public Library to our most recent project in the study phase in Waltham, the firm keeps busy designing flexible libraries that fit the needs of any community. In this first episode of our library series, we’ll take you through the firm’s approach to every library project and what makes this public building so special. And our approach to library design has changed in the last five decades, but the clear communication, future-forward design, and understanding of each community stays the same.

Last week, we were thrilled to attend the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Jones Library Renovation and Expansion project in Amherst, MA. As construction kicks off, we will soon see the transformation unfold, including a three-story addition to the rear of the building to address 21st century needs in accessibility, security, the HVAC system, and technology. The ceremony included speeches from U.S. Representative Jim Govern, Jones Library Director Sharon Sharry, members of the Amherst community and building committee. It was a well-attended event filled with joyous Amherst residents and project team members including Finegold Alexander Principal-in-Charge Ellen Anselone, Design Principal Tony Hsiao, Project Manager Josephine Penta, Project Architect Dan Wilder and Principal Emeritus Jim Alexander who snagged a selfie with Jones Library mascot!

Finegold Alexander is excited to work with General Contractor Fontaine Brothers to see the completion of this project in 2027. Read more about the event here!

In Boston's South End, a restoration and adaptation of two historic buildings make up The Royal residences. From the original 19th century headquarters of the Royal Arcanum and the 1855 brick row house, Finegold Alexander created a 12-unit residence with one- to three-bedrooms and a six-car parking garage. The gut renovation also included energy efficient windows, blown-in insulation, and high velocity HVAC systems that matched the historical nature of the building with sustainability in mind. Looking for a place to stay in Boston? Stop by The Godfrey Hotel! The 2016 Finegold Alexander restoration made it onto the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best Hotels in the US! The Godfrey was ranked number 6 by way of above-and-beyond reviews on the site.

What used to be two adjacent 1900s historic buildings in Downtown Crossing were converted into a 242-room boutique hotel. The building exterior features restored, ornate masonry and white terracotta from the original buildings. This predicted Energy Use Intensity (pEUI) describes the energy use for a project based on modeled site energy. Because of the work of the FA Energy team, our low pEUIs on renovations and new construction projects reflect the commitment to sustainability and efficient performance.
