May is National Historic Preservation Month! To celebrate, we’re sharing some of our proudest preservation achievements in the firm’s 46-year history.

At Schwartz/Silver, working within historic settings is in our DNA. We adapt and expand existing buildings to support new uses while preserving (and sometimes restoring) their original character. We create architecture that respects both history and context. Especially in New England, we believe the best projects are those that allow existing buildings to continue evolving so they remain relevant to their communities and vibrant for generations.

Scroll down to see some of our projects that put historic preservation front and center.

We're honored to be a part of this momentous project and to be working with such an amazing team!

We’re excited to share that Associate Kelsey Laser, AIA will be representing Schwartz/Silver next Wednesday, April 29th at the 'It Takes a Village Framework' Launch Party hosted by Womxn in Design at the Boston Society for Architecture.

This event celebrates the launch of a new AIA-published framework designed to help firms and employees navigate a more sustainable balance between work and home. Kelsey will join a panel of presenters discussing how the new framework can support caregivers, strengthen workplace culture, and build a more sustainable future in the architectural profession.

We are proud to announce that firm President, Angela Ward Hyatt, FAIA, will serve as Jury Chair for the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2026 Architecture Award and Twenty-Five Year Award. The Architecture Award celebrates the best of contemporary design, while the Twenty-Five Year Award recognizes a single project that has stood as a benchmark of design excellence for 25 to 35 years.

As Chair, Angela will work with a nationwide panel of 16 experts appointed by the AIA President to identify the projects and architects whose creativity, vision, and skill are most deserving of these prestigious honors. She says leading the Jury is “truly a dream come true.” Stay tuned for the Award announcements at the AIA Conference in San Diego in June!

We are saddened to hear about the passing of James McCown, who was our Director of Marketing from 2003 to 2006. James had a great passion for architecture, and we are grateful for the time he spent with Schwartz/Silver and all the years we kept in touch afterwards. He was open about his battle with cancer, and he continued to pour himself into his writing until the very end, maintaining that it gave him focus during his illness. Fortunately, for all of us, his insightful words will live on.

His obituary was published earlier this week in The Architect's Newspaper:

James McCown died on December 14, 2025, in New York City. An obituary recalled that his “extraordinary encyclopedic knowledge of art and architecture was renown and he generously shared that passion with all.”

Schwartz/Silver had the privilege of working with Frank Gehry on 360 Newbury Street, which won the Harleston Parker Medal in 1991 as the “most beautiful building” in Greater Boston. At the time, it was one of the largest built projects for both offices. Frank made an indelible mark, and with this early work he transformed both Boston and our practice. We are so grateful to be a part of his amazing legacy, may his example last for generations.
