On this last day of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we are pleased to feature Associate Principal John Gonzalez who manages DHK’s transportation practice. John grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He went to college at the University of Florida, and after taking Architecture 101 as an elective, he was smitten. He obtained his degree in Architecture, and upon graduating returned to Puerto Rico where he got a job in Henry Klumb’s firm among many others.
Klumb was one of Frank Lloyd Wright's first apprentices at Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin. After briefly partnering with Louis I. Kahn and others, Klumb was invited to Puerto Rico to help design post-WWII Puerto Rico. He designed many government buildings, the master plan for the University of Puerto Rico and many campus buildings. John says working at Klumb’s firm was an incredible opportunity for a young designer and a fast initiation into the world of architectural design at the highest level.
A meeting by pure happenstance led John to Boston. He went to present his portfolio to the director of the School of Architecture in Puerto Rico. The director had a visitor in his office and invited John to present his portfolio to both men. The visitor was Fernando Domenech. Soon John was in Boston working at DHK Architects (then known as CPF/Domenech & Hicks) and finalizing his studies at the BAC.
The array of projects John has worked on includes such major regional projects as the Ted Williams Tunnel, the Transitway at South Station, the Central Artery Project, the MBTA Blue Line State Street Station Renovation, the Vineyard Haven Ferry Terminal, and the current renovation of the MBTA’s Symphony Station. He finds these projects exciting and says the process of working to design and join new structures to the city’s existing infrastructure, both under- and above-ground, is immensely challenging and satisfying.
Moreover, John loves the process of directing and mentoring the many talented individuals in the firm. He considers himself fortunate to have been mentored by and learned from Fernando and all the firm’s partners, and he feels especially privileged to work closely with and be mentored by Mickey Krockmalnic.
