Our social media manager has finally emerged from a prolonged winter hibernation upon threat of being replaced by an AI agent…. We’re still here and all over Boston/New England, pushing along exciting work for our clients and forging new relationships. Excited for the warmth, rejuvenation, and new opportunities that the season ahead holds. Cheers to Spring and Happy Friday!

Exciting progress at our Somerville Project in Union Square: (1) Front elevation rendering, (2-5) progress construction photos, (6-7) “before” photos.

The new front porch roof is the most important element in reviving the exterior of this home. Having been previously split into two units before our clients purchased in 2016, we have since designed and completed construction on phases I and II to completely overhaul the interior. Now we are finally bringing the exterior up to form.

Last week we had our SHAKE company offsite gathering up in Vermont. We met up at our new construction job site and put in two days of work there, with an incredible night in between. We made and shared delicious food, plenty of laughs, and more than enough spirited competition in the barn (despite only one decent photo emerging from the evening).

Thrilled to be able to showcase our work alongside so many incredible design and construction talents that we admire in New England Home Magazine’s Sep/Oct Edition.

“Balancing a client’s aspirations for their home with practical project constraints does not need to stifle creativity…”

This kitchen, and larger project as a whole, exemplifies our commitment to bold, unique architecture solutions, rooted in their historic context, and most critically, delivered through an integrated design/build process that takes our clients budgets and schedules further than they would otherwise be able to go.

A skylight is carefully nestled into a complex knot of contending rooflines, vying for precious space that also had to accommodate the runs for the ducted heat pump system as well as the ERV for continuous fresh and efficient air exchange. Needless to say, there is a lot going on with the roof here!

At the end of the day - and at the end of a long battle with historic commissions over the validity of shed dormers within colonial architectural context (!) - we were able to transform a tiny attic space into two bright kids bedrooms and a full bath. The skylight sits right at home in this critical nexus, spilling light into the new stairwell, hallway, bathroom and bedrooms alike.

Board is up and we are moving into plaster at our townhouse on the Flat of the Hill. The primary bathroom features a full height cladding of Calacatta Gold Picasso, fabricated and installed by . We opted to install this stone and floating vanity now to be able to better control the finish/terminations of surrounding plaster surfaces to stone. We also had some considerable additions and changes to the electrical scope on the project as a whole which caused us to figure out ways to push as much of the finish as we could before having our rough inspection secured. Getting this stone in made sense from the standpoint of both schedule, site logistics and finish detailing.

Incredible ex*****on by our trade partners Curtis Sheet Metal and Tony Savini on the repair and replication of this original copper cornice trim and gutter.

Working on a townhouse in Beacon Hill means understanding and operating within the architectural historic guidelines which ensure that anything visible from a public way is repaired, preserved, or replicated using the same care and quality materials as the original.

Turns out we do make ‘em like they used to…

Morning light in a new powder room.

Adding a half bath was a key program requirement for our clients. Every inch of space in this project was carefully considered as we sought to put forth a compact structure that was respectful of the surrounding neighborhood context.
