Happy International Women’s Day! I think a lot about what it is to be a woman in the world right now. I generally flip flop between feeling grateful and feeling annoyed. But today, I’m focusing on gratitude and want to say THANK YOU to customers who speak through their actions and go out of their way to shop women owned small biz!
More IWD reflections below-
I grew up in an entrepreneurial family. My dad and both brothers started their own businesses. They showed me it’s ok to take risks. My mom though, she worked harder than anyone I’ve ever known. Working full time as a nurse, while taking care of three kids and a home, and in a time before Uber and door dash. I wish I could go back in time and tell younger her how in awe I am of her. She is the person who taught me how to grind, and that there is always a way to get it done if you think creatively. If someone with her work ethic and ability to juggle had grown up in a time where female business ownership was the norm, she very well could have started a company that revolutionized the world by now. Don’t get me wrong, there are few jobs more admirable than nursing, and from the science to the loving touch, my mom was damn good at it. It just makes me wonder what the world might look like if the expectation of women as caregivers only, had started to shift sooner.
It’s scary, but I feel some responsibility to be an example and normalize female entrepreneurship. What makes it less scary is finding out it’s working. Just the other day my brother sent me a video of my niece singing a song in the bathtub about her aunt who owns a plant shop, and she loves thinking of fun business ideas and playing “shop owner.” That is what makes me feel proud of Boon.
I could quite literally write an entire book about the women in my life that inspire me. It blows my mind how brilliant, hard working, deeply caring, kind and beautiful all of my female friends and mentors are. I could cry with the amount of gratitude that I have for them being in my life.
There are a lot of things I was to rant and rage about as well, but this Women’s days, I’m choosing to focus on progress and appreciation.
