The paperwork is officially signed, stamped, and delivered. This means we can finally break ground on this dream modern cabin retreat!

It has been a long time in the making. Seeing the vision come to life on paper was one thing, but getting the green light to actually build it makes it feel incredibly real.
This is one of the renders that kept us going through all the county paperwork! Next stop: excavation and breaking ground.

A favorite pantry in an well-considered, essentialist kitchen where we took the leap of faith that a simple frig in the pantry might meet this family's needs just as well as a fancy panel-front frig front and center. And it was. Well-considered design is still the root of a good outcome, even as materialist maximalism is having a moment.

A balance of mostly symmetry with calculated asymmetry creates a felt experience of conclusion and repose for this central boulder full-remodel with .

Warm white oak kitchen with and re-thinking the definition of upper cabinet; beautiful natural stone, concealed lighting...re-tooling refrigeration and pantry storage as modern armoires. Inviting repose with consistency of material, with curated scale and proportion that once it's finished, isn't consciously measured, but it is experienced.

What is purpose-driven design? Lately I have been asking what is the purpose behind design moves and selections, and maybe zooming out, what purpose defines my own motivations and work.

With this one, it's easy. local agriculture, an oasis of flowers painting the plains, agrarian lifestyle, community building, soil-restoration. Every corner put to use for seeds, storage, germination trays, egg refrigeration as we made a strategic addition to a no-nonsense, 100-year-old stick built county farmhouse for a wonderful farming duo and (and their furry helpers) that aren't afraid of hard work.

What purpose drives our plans, goals--homestead, even? When you know, I see it and get on board.

The land is the client.

I've heard this expression lately and I want to use it as a mantra for a while. Regardless of lot size, light, views, growing things, sounds and seasonal patterns of climates working on that patch of dirt become the paintbrush of life and light on exterior and interior spaces of a home.

Before form, before materials, before architecture—there is the site.
Its light, its contours, its quiet cues about how a home wants to live.

How does architecture listen, not impose?
At Vineyard, a Napa-valley inspired project from my Surround days, outdoor rooms unfold as extensions of the landscape, materials echo their surroundings, and walls trace geologic contours which yield curated light in the space.

Good design reveals what was already there.

Capturing Sleeping Giant for in the very early spring was really something with … we tried to keep our , “talent” fed and happy as waves spring storms rolled in through the Flattops. What an incredibly beautiful and fierce place Colorado can be and what an honor it is to sit with the seasons changing. More spring gales to come, I hope, more barns to raise and trees to plant, plans to refine, maybe even simplify, until they honor the place the are a part of; more dreams to get off the ground this year.

Honored to be featured in for my beloved and hard-wrought project, Sleeping Giant Ranch. It is an honest story of the tension between our dreams and real objective budget constraints; about finding a way forward nonetheless; about self-doubt on the path, my love affair with Northwest Colorado, and agricultural buildings and Rocky Mountain vernacular then …. and now; ancient building wisdom meeting today’s climate and technology; Colorado’s remaining beautiful, fragile, wild places, and the wonderful experiences our family has had as a result of this journey of building a ski house on the outskirts of Steamboat Springs. It was a pretty vulnerable storytelling of building this house, finding this land, but I hope others will relate. Houses are also dreams. With deep gratitude to the editorial team of Modern In Denver and the artistry and hard work in the wild of who makes world-changing fine art photography, and, also, shot this very simple barn that came from my heart. ❤️

Like a camera lens shifting between long and short focus, residential architecture asks us to hold both the micro and the macro in view. The smallest interior selection and the bold, sweeping massing moves must work in harmony—creating hierarchy and continuity between interior and exterior.

In this primary bath, a restrained palette—custom oak vanity console, steel and glass shower enclosure, custom storage mirror—creates a sense of calm, continuity, and elevated repose.

Spring is around the corner, and outdoor living is key.

This Cherry Hills remodel seamlessly blends modern minimalism and luxurious comfort. With creative re-use of an existing courtyard, alongside a main level remodel, we re-tooled the exterior for a little more light but not too much, with a custom steel pergola and curated a functional new patio plan to stretch the use to 3 seasons in Colorado. Why not start eating outside in March?

What is keeping you from enjoying your outdoor spaces?
