Spruill Studio Creating personalized, livable interiors that feel like home. Based in Boulder and the Vail Valley. Every home tells a story.

At Spruill Studio, I help clients shape theirs through interiors that feel both refined and livable. I’m Jessica Spruill, founder and principal designer of Spruill Studio, a client-centered, design-forward interior design firm based in the Boulder/Denver metro area and the Vail Valley. My work is grounded in creativity and precision, blending a love of shaping interiors with a professional background in business and project management. After more than a decade in investment banking, I shifted careers to pursue a lifelong passion for residential design. I studied Interior Design at Parsons School of Design while overseeing the design and construction of several homes, including two new builds — an experience that reinforced my love for thoughtful, well-executed spaces. Spruill Studio partners closely with clients, builders, and architects to deliver tailored interiors that express personal style and balance beauty with function. While I primarily serve clients in Boulder/Denver and the Vail Valley, I also collaborate on select projects beyond Colorado when the right opportunity arises. Let’s connect if you’re interested in creating a home that reflects the way you live.

Not every material is meant to look flawless.

On this exterior, the weathered wood siding and natural stone were chosen because of their variation, not in spite of it. The grain, the tonal shifts, the way the texture changes as the light moves across the house throughout the day.

Materials like these keep evolving as they weather, and that's part of why a home like this feels settled into its landscape instead of placed on it.

That's not something to correct. It's something to design around.

Beautiful lighting isn’t just about the fixture.

Color temperature, placement, light quality and the way different sources of light work together all affect how a room feels.
One of the biggest things we look for is consistency in color temperature. When warm and cool light sources are mixed in the same space, the result can feel jarring and dated.

For most residential interiors, we typically specify 2700K–3000K for warm, natural light.

We also look at how recessed lighting is integrated into the ceiling and where lamps and sconces can add another layer of light.

The fixture matters. But it’s only one part of the lighting plan.

I didn’t start my career in interior design.

Before Spruill Studio, I spent more than a decade working in investment banking and financial services.

It may seem like a completely different world, but I use more of that experience in my design business than you might think.

Managing complex projects. Paying attention to details. Working within budgets. Communicating with multiple people. Knowing when a decision needs to be made so the entire project can keep moving.

Design absolutely requires creativity. But beautiful ideas are only part of creating a successful home.

The other part is taking all of those ideas, decisions, timelines and details and turning them into a finished space.

And strangely enough, my first career prepared me pretty well for that.

A beautiful room that doesn’t work for your life isn’t good design.

For this mountain home outside Beaver Creek, our clients wanted a large, open space that would be beautiful for entertaining—but it also had to work for everyday family life.

The challenge? Those two things didn’t necessarily need to happen in exactly the same place.

We designed the main living area around a statement fireplace clad in large-format stone, creating a dramatic backdrop for an original piece of art and a natural focal point when guests gather.

But on a normal night, dinner is being made, kids are hanging out, someone wants the TV on—and everyone still wants to be together.

So just off the kitchen, we created a second, more casual living area. It’s close enough that everyone can talk without shouting across the house, but separate enough that cooking, conversation and TV can all happen at the same time.

Connected, but functionally separate.

The result is one open space that works in two very different ways—without sacrificing the beauty of either.

Because solving how a family actually lives in a space is just as important as making it beautiful.

You can love your home and still be ready for a change.

Often, some of the pieces worth keeping are already there. The opportunity is in figuring out what stays, what changes and what will help everything come together.

A new rug or drapery. Beautiful fabrics. A paint color that supports the palette rather than dictates it. Or simply giving the things you love a little more room to breathe.

Sometimes a few changes can shift the way an entire room feels.

Ever crowd four bottles onto one tiny shower ledge, praying nothing falls when you reach for the shampoo?

This niche in progress is the fix.

We worked with our builder to design and measure it specifically: a lower shelf sized for full-size shampoo and conditioner bottles — with enough clearance to actually pump them without knocking anything over — and an upper shelf sized just right for a razor and shaving cream.

It's a detail most people will never think about. Until it's not there.

Not every refresh means starting over.

For this living room, the sofa had to stay — it was a great piece, no reason to replace it. But the client wanted the whole space to feel new.

We brought in new furniture, refreshed the lighting, and layered in a new rug with soft blue and grey undertones. But textiles were a big part of what pulled it all together — custom pillows and drapery made by our seamstress, using beautiful high-end fabrics that picked up the hues in the rug against a crisp white base.

A good reminder: pillows only take a small amount of fabric, which means you can invest in a gorgeous, high-quality textile without a big price tag — and the impact on a room is huge.

The best time to call a designer is usually earlier than you think.

Maybe you’ve committed to a renovation and haven’t finalized the finishes. Maybe your builder is starting to ask for selections, or you want to furnish several rooms but aren’t sure where to begin.

Or maybe you’re simply starting to think that a room—or your home—could use a refresh, but you don’t quite know what that looks like yet.

You don’t need to have it all figured out before reaching out. Bringing a designer in early gives us more options and a chance to think through the big picture before individual decisions start locking you into a direction.

And it doesn’t always have to mean a large, full-service project. Sometimes you need help with the entire process. Sometimes you just need experienced guidance to figure out where to start.

If a home project has been on your mind for this fall or winter—even if it’s still just an idea—now is a good time to start the conversation. Visit Spruill Studio to get in touch.

One of my favorite parts of the design process is exploring just how different the same room can feel.

As part of a larger project, we rendered a few different directions for this powder room to help inform our final selections.

Dark and moody, with a richly textured wallcovering, deep paint and slate flooring.

Warm, organic and textural, with soft neutral tones, woven wallcovering and honed stone.

Or refined contrast, pairing a deeper blue-green wallcovering with lighter finishes and limestone.

We’re also exploring another variable—paneled versus non-paneled walls.

I love the architectural dimension paneling can bring to a room. But seeing the options side by side also shows how much depth and character can come simply from stronger material and paint choices.

In a smaller space, the simpler architectural approach can be every bit as compelling—while allowing the overall project investment to be directed toward the places where it will have the greatest impact.

This is one of the reasons rendering is such a useful part of our process. We can explore the possibilities and compare not just individual selections, but how each combination changes the overall feeling of the room before anything is ordered or installed.

Same room. Three very different personalities.

Which would you choose: dark + moody, warm + textural, or refined contrast?
