Big job in Cumberland this week prepping for a new build working with Matthew Cunningham Landscape Design and Sculptured Earth.

Before the old house was torn down, there was a large stand of pine trees at the front of the property. Over the last couple of years many of the trees were taken down, exposing the rest to the high wind off the coast.

Over the last 3 weeks, 4 of those remaining trees blew over due to wind and snow so the homeowners wanted them all out.

This homeowner just wanted the tree on the ground- she plans to burn the brush and has a family friend who is interested in the wood.

Got the call to take down a couple of trees this winter…ended up coming back go do some spring cleanup and freshen up the landscape around this large commercial property to prep for new plantings and additional landscape work later this spring.

Tree/shrub removal is not the only part of tree care. Even healthy trees and shrubs need to be taken care of in order to keep them in good condition. This includes applying mulch, removing dead/decayed portions of the plant, old growth cut backs, root collar excavations, etc.

🚨 🐛- BROWNTAIL MOTH (BTM)- 🐛 🚨

BTM season is quickly approaching. These nuisance insects are active beginning in mid-April. Most Maine residents are familiar with BTM because of the rashes and respiratory issues these caterpillars cause.

The hairs on the caterpillars are poisonous and are spread in the air by way of wind, mowing, leaf blowing, etc. They can cling to clothes and cause health concerns to sensitive individuals because of the chemical reaction to the toxin in the hairs, and the physical irritation due to the barbed nature of the hairs. The hairs can remain toxic up to 3 years.

There are several ways to combat BTM, both chemical and non-chemical.

J & B Tree Care is currently unable to offer any chemical solutions this season, however we intend to offer those services next year. That being said, we have 4+ years of experience dealing with BTM and spraying for their control at our previous employer.
