Your water well will have four general components: the well itself, a pump, a holding or reservoir tank, and the water lines from the tank. In addition to drilling the well, we also install the pump and holding tank.

The method of creating driven wells is similar in many ways to drilling, but can only be done in softer ground such as sand. A pipe with a point and a screen is thrust into the ground, then driven down with a pile driver-like device until it hits groundwater.

It’s important that drinking water wells are properly located to minimize the risk of contamination. If there are possible contamination sources in the area, then they should be located uphill from those sources.

Most shallow wells, including almost all hand-dug wells, are called "water table wells" or "unconfined aquifer wells." The aquifers supplying water to these wells stop at the water table, which means the water isn't under any natural pressure.

In the 1850s, the process for transforming iron into steel was developed, and, by 1855, cost-effective mass-production was feasible. In 1868, tungsten steel was invented, but 44 years would pass before the process for making stainless steel was discovered.

Did you know that the diameter of the drilled well hole is usually an inch or two wider than the diameter of the casing? This space is filled with either cement or special volcanic clay called "bentonite" to keep any polluted water from contaminating the aquifer.

There are an estimated 1 to 2 million water wells in California, based on data compiled in 2015. According to the number of well completion reports on file with the Department of Water Resources, however, only 800,000 are in active use.

In winter, underground temperatures are warmer than air temperatures; so geothermal wells extract that heat and use it to warm homes and buildings. In summer, underground temperatures are cooler than the air, so heat is extracted from a building and transferred into the earth.

In some cases, when a well screen is installed, an envelope of sand or gravel (called a gravel or filter pack) may be placed outside the well screen, between the screen and the bore hole wall. This works to keep fine sediment from entering the screen while promoting the movement of water into the well.

A common drill bit type is called a "roller bit." These bits have three or more rollers that are tipped with either steel or carbide. The favorite is the tricone bit, made with three rollers that both chip and crush rock. The interlocking teeth also provide an auto-cleaning action as they turn.

What is an injection well? Rather than extract water, injection wells are designed to put water into the ground or groundwater basin. They can be used to repel intruding sea or waste water or flush contaminants.

We have track-mounted rigs that allow us to work in areas with limited access. Their design allows for rapid drilling of several holes without time lost due to constantly setting up equipment.
