My favorite dahlias that were new to me this year. They were fabulous for either amazing color, beautiful form, abundant blooms, or all of the above! I haven’t dug any of these yet, but hoping for lots of tubers!

Last year I had decided (in the midst of a difficult year) not to sell dahlia tubers again. I may sell again, but it might look different this year. I will certainly do some trading for special dahlias I’m still looking for, but may also try a local sale for pick up in the late winter. May also sell online. All depends on how many tubers I end up with and what I have after trades. Stay tuned.

A few pics of my flowers at the Washington County Fair Dahlia Show run by the RI Dahlia Society. It’s difficult to have lots of flowers in bloom at this time of the year, especially with the heat and drought.

1. Dahlia ‘Snoho Storm’
2. And 3. Flower arrangements
3. Floating water lily (a dahlia form) that was in the water too long and sank, but still won best water lily (it hadn’t sunk as much when judged)
4. Snoho Storm wins King of the Court!

Awaiting the opening of Suitzus Julie’s first bud. This is a dahlia micro waterlily that I started from a gifted 1” white tuber sprout from a fellow dahlia society member. Started in a propagator, moved to the greenhouse and is now planted on my front walk. Coming soon! Other photos show some of this cutting’s progression.

Finally got around to checking out last year’s seedlings that I kept. The force is strong with these! They were actually pushing the lid off the styrofoam box. They will join this years’s seedlings in the ground in the next couple of days.

Last few cuttings are in the propagator. This little gem is a Micro Waterlily form that I couldn’t find anywhere. A fellow dahlia society member was generous and cut a ~1” white sprout tip from one of his tubers. It went right into a cup of potting mix and sand and into the propagator. It turned green right away but then stalled a bit. Just in the last week, I can see new growth and the start of routes. It’s about to get potted up. I think it’s going to make it!

Assassin bugs are hatching! I’m taking a multi-pronged approach to ward off chewing and infecting insects from my dahlias: Assassin bugs, nematodes, Lacewing flies and BRIX. Will see how things go this year!
