Don’t forget this important detail, when using emergency heat for your heat pump: Once the low temps are close to 20 degrees, your thermostat should be switched back to the NORMAL heat setting.

Public Alert: In single digit temps, even low teens, its a good idea to turn your Emergency Heat ON, if you have a heat pump.

Explanation: It’s widely recommended to shut off a heat pump at exceptionally low temperatures. A heat pump only absorbs available heat in the atmosphere. The less available heat, the less heat they produce. While many debate how low a heat pump will remain efficient, many recommend going to emergency heat in these severe conditions. We usually don’t bother with changing it up until prolonged temperatures such as these, but certainly when dipping into the single digits. In these temps your heat pump will struggle to deliver much heat at all and won’t keep up to your desired temperature. Then it’s up to your electric elements to kick in to supplement your heat pump, running both appliances together. This can be expensive and also fairly taxing on your equipment. We’d recommend turning your stat to emergency heat now until we are well past the single digits once again. If temps were just briefly dipping in to the low teens over night then you really shouldn’t be worried about it, but this kind of cold is exceptional. Also, as things begin to thaw, be watchful of freezing precip coming from off of your roof. Ice and snow sliding off and landing on top of your heat pump can damage fan blades and coils, so pay attention even as things begin to heat back up.
