Always use a setting-type compound, not spackle, for drywall repairs larger than a nail hole. Spackle shrinks as it dries, which means you'll end up with a dimple showing through your paint.
Setting compound stays put and gives you that smooth, level surface that won't telegraph through your finish coat. It takes a little longer to work with, but your walls will look right for years instead of needing touch-ups every season.
