UPDATE: No surprise here. SPC shifted the level 2 of 5 (slight) severe storm outlook Tuesday a little further south in our viewing area including San Antonio & Bexar County.

This is mainly for risk of strong wind gusts, can't rule out some hail. Risk of large hail is higher out toward Del Rio in this outlook.

Timing: In & around San Antonio, 7pm - 1am window as I see it.

🚨 TEXAS SEVERE STORM OUTLOOK FOR SUNDAY

Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop Sunday afternoon and continue Sunday night as a cold front moves south through Texas.

This is not looking like a major tornado setup for most of Texas, but it is a setup that can produce very large hail and damaging straight-line winds.

Highest risk zone: West-Central, Central, and North Texas — including parts of the Big Country, Concho Valley, Hill Country, I-20 corridor, DFW Metroplex, Waco/Killeen, and nearby areas.

Main threats:
⚾ Large to very large hail, possibly larger than 2 inches
💨 Damaging winds of 70+ MPH possible, locally higher
🌧️ Heavy rain and localized flooding where storms train
🌪️ Tornado risk is low, but not zero, especially where storms stay more isolated or interact with boundaries

Estimated timing:
• West-Central Texas / Big Country / Concho Valley: Sunday afternoon into evening
• North Texas / DFW / Waco / Killeen: Sunday afternoon through evening
• Hill Country / Austin / San Antonio: mainly Sunday evening into Sunday night
• East Texas / Southeast Texas: Sunday evening into overnight
• South Texas / RGV: late Sunday night into pre-dawn Monday, with a lower severe risk

Do not focus only on the color over your house. Storms can be severe outside the highest risk zone, and the exact placement/timing will depend on where morning storms and outflow boundaries end up.

Practical prep before storms arrive:
✅ Move vehicles under cover if you can
✅ Secure patio furniture, trash cans, trampolines, and loose outdoor items
✅ Charge phones and have multiple ways to receive warnings
✅ Avoid being on the road when storms arrive — especially Sunday evening/night
✅ Have a plan to get inside quickly if warnings are issued

We’ll keep tracking the timing and threat zones as newer data comes in. David will have a video briefing posted later today.

In the late 1970s, NPSOT founder Carroll Abbott —known as “Mr. Bluebonnet”—along with Texas Woman’s University President Mary Evelyn Blagg Huey, successfully lobbied Texas legislators to designate the fourth Saturday in April as Texas Wildflower Day.

Our low temperatures last night hit below freezing around midnight and continued to be below freezing until about 8 am. Lowest temperature I saw was 30°, but 8 hours at or below freezing was enough to damage our fig tree, Anacua tree, and likely blooms on the pear and plum trees. I’m hoping everything that we covered overnight survived the freeze.
