HandySmith has added vehicle modification to its wheelhouse. My friend Nate with Primo Plumbing needed some help to outfit his most recent work van. As you might know, plumbers don’t do carpentry well! So myself and my previous intern, Jayton, jumped in to give him a hand. With some ideas of what Nate wanted, a few measurements, some wood glue and a bunch of screws, we put this together. With the addition of a tool box and some supplies, Nate now has a truck that is organized and stocked for the next plumbing job.

Kathy gave me a call because she wanted to spruce up her wall. With some trim and some crown moulding, the wall took a very different look. Add some paint and hat hooks and we now have an acent wall that isnt just a plain wall. Thanks for the call Kathy, this was a fun project!

The Catio! Yep, I didn’t know what it was either when my customer asked me to build one. It is a patio for your cat. Really slick idea! We used an existing pet door that was on the side of the house to let the cats out and then built this enclosure packed full of features. A translucent roof to keep the rain out. Multiple levels to climb or relax on. Vinyl coated wire mesh to a clean look that won’t rust. And an access door for maintenance and cleaning. Tate gave me a call because the planter box on the front of his home needed a little TLC. Upon arriving, I found the corbels had not been fastened to the house very well, and they were the only thing holding it up. So first order of business was new corbels fastened to the studs of the exterior wall using timber screws. Then it was on to the box. New pressure treated bottom and new end pieces. With a fresh coat of paint, one would never know it was once falling off the house. Just one of the less ordinary things that HandySmith does!

This year hit a little harder than the rest. Why? Because it marks a decade in business. Through every challenge and headache, so many of you have stayed by my side. And for that, I’m endlessly grateful.

Cindy called me recently to build a ramp to her back deck. While small in size, it was a challenge! The top stair was level, the second step was not. The concrete sloped towards the house and the pavers sloped away from the house. Needless to say, this made it a challenge. Each stringer was cut specifically to fit its respective location and match the imperfections in the surface below. All this effort was to ensure the ramp was level as well as sturdy. It is not often that I build a shed, but I have fun when I do. Sandi called because she could not find anyone else to build her unique shed. It had a different shape, “L” shaped, had a 10/12 pitch roof and needed some electrical run inside. It was a tall order, but I was up for it. Need a headboard? How about using a countertop? Cindy recently had me help bring her vision to life. With the crazy cost of head boards, which are made out of cheap materials, Cindy started looking for other materials. She found a butcher block counter that she loved, but didn’t know how to mount it. After a quick coat of stain and poly finish, I installed a French cleat on the back and the other half on the wall above the bed. It was a great alternative and has a great look. Great idea Cindy!
