Dawn’s back deck had definitely seen better days. The boards were weathered, splitting, and a few had even come loose over time. She reached out to HandySmith to see if it could be replaced with something newer and maintenance-free.

The solution was a full rebuild featuring a new pressure-treated substructure topped with Trex composite decking. The result is a deck that’s not only safer and sturdier, but also built to last for years with minimal upkeep.

Enjoy your new deck, Dawn!

Louie and Michelle love their front porch so much that they decided to extend it by about five feet with new concrete, creating even more usable space. The only issue was the original railing, which now sat awkwardly in the middle of the expanded porch and no longer made sense in its original location.

To bring everything back together, the railing was reworked and relocated to the new outer edge of the porch. A few new posts, some carefully matched spindles, and two coats of paint later, the entire space feels cohesive and refreshed.

The result is a porch that not only looks better, but functions the way it was intended after the expansion. If you have a railing project on your porch, give us a call to see how HandySmith can help.

Steve and Denise had their basement finished, but access to the water main had to remain. Unfortunately, the original contractor left behind a makeshift cover that was difficult to remove and already falling apart. They needed something far more functional—something that would allow quick access in the event of a leak, without sacrificing appearance.

The solution was simple and effective: a clean frame around the opening, a piece of MDF, and a pair of hidden hinges. The result is a solid, easy-to-operate access panel that blends right into the wall once painted.

Now it’s functional, discreet, and built to last. If you’re looking for creative solutions to everyday problems, give HandySmith a call.

Stairs in disrepair? Call HandySmith and we’ll be there.

This staircase had been in service for over 50 years and had clearly reached the end of its lifespan. The joints were separating, the fasteners had failed, and the whole structure had become unsafe. While it had served the home well for decades, it was time for a secure new set of stairs along with a new handrail.

With a stack of lumber and a full day of help from my intern, the old stairs were removed and replaced with a completely new set. New stringers, along with glued-and-screwed risers and treads, created a solid, long-lasting build.

The finished staircase is now sturdy, safe, and built to last for decades to come. If your stairs are in disrepair, give HandySmith a call.

When Krista mentioned she needed a Swedish climbing wall built, I’ll admit I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. What I didn’t anticipate was that it would turn into a six-hour project!

That time included fabricating several missing pieces that weren’t included in the box, which added an extra layer of challenge to the build. None the less, it turned into a rewarding project.

In the end, the result came out great—and Krista’s kids could hardly wait for me to finish before they were ready to start climbing.

Chris and Christy reached out with an idea about a peninsula off their living room that felt like wasted space. It appeared there might be nothing more than empty void beneath the countertop.

After a bit of investigation, we confirmed there was no usable structure inside the cabinet or walls, which opened the door for a creative solution. A large opening was carefully cut, and a cabinet was fitted into the space.

With trim added to finish the details, the new cabinet blends in seamlessly—as if it had always been part of the original design. What was once unused space is now practical, functional storage.

If you’re looking to turn wasted space into something useful, give HandySmith a call.

Wrought iron spindles can completely transform the look of a staircase. Rachel and K***n reached out because they wanted to modernize theirs and give it a more updated feel.

We removed the original white wood spindles and replaced them with sleek wrought iron balusters, instantly changing the character of the space. The result is a clean, modern look that feels like a brand-new staircase.

If you’re considering a similar update in your home, give HandySmith a call.

Don and Jeanne recently reached out after noticing their deck stairs were literally coming apart. The bottom of the original steps had been resting on paver blocks that had settled over time, causing the stairs to pull away from the deck and lose their structural integrity. It was clear a full replacement was needed.

The first step in the process was to install a solid concrete pad to properly support the new stairs and also help address the uneven grade by forming an additional step. With a stable foundation in place, new stair stringers were installed to complete the rebuild. The result is a much stronger, more durable set of stairs designed to last significantly longer than the original.
