Ooh La LAVENDER 💜 It’s in full bloom! Harvesting & bundling to dry is underway. Started from seed four years ago, our Heirloom English Lavender has expanded itself into a beautiful boarder to our medicinal garden.

We will dry it for teas & to make a simple syrup for refreshing drinks. After dried, we remove the buds from the stem & tie the stems into small bundles to place around the house or in front of fans for the wonderful smell. We don’t use any synthetic fragrances in our home as it bothers our sinuses, but this is the most simple way to keep your house smelling light & fresh without any of the work of making an oil, extract, or candle. Once you feel like they have released all of its fragrance, just toss it into the fire pit to enjoy the very last bit!

Our Blackberry patch was in need of some serious trellising & row management. These photos are before I got all the rows in line, which was significantly more difficult than the trellising! I exclusively used things that I had on hand & although it’s hard to see, there is thin wire running down the rows to prop the plants vertical.

Blackberry plants will root themselves anywhere along their stem that makes contact with soil. It will make a thick tangled mess, restrict airflow, and force the plant to expend energy on new root growth rather than flowering & fruiting. Even now in rows, we trimmed the bottom leaves to about a foot off of the ground for better air flow & removed some branches in the clusters. The trellis system isn’t perfect, but it will hold well enough for a few season & be a huge help in getting our plants back on track to growing upward rather than outward.

The grape vine is next on the list!

Strawberry Plants 🍓 the best garden perennial there is in my opinion! They multiply quickly so those few plants you first invest in run into a full strawberry patch before your eyes. Plus, they are such a delicious treat.

Available for delivery for Farmer at the Door members or you can pick some up at The Petrie Family Farms self serve farm stand in Brimfield.

Last fall I teamed up with The Timmerwoodz Homestead because we had so many Strawberry Plants! He potted them up and I overwintered them in my hoophouse so they would pop up early for you!
Strawberries are a bit of a project, but if you have the desire for sweet, spring fruit, this June bearing variety will not disappoint! Make sure to plant in good compost, mulch well, since strawberries don't like to dry out or compete for food. In fall, your last task will be to make sure to separate out runners and plant your new patch. Strawberries need to breathe so make sure your old patch and your new one have good airflow and aren't planted too close together.

Two full days worth of worth and four silly looking little sticks marks a big step for us. We have officially started growing in our upper field, starting with 4 mulberry trees. These are standard Red Mulberry trees, native to Massachusetts. They are fast growers and are expected to be anywhere from 30 to 60 feet tall. We absolutely love mulberries, they delicious & can be used for all sorts of recipes, but they are a sensitive little berry with a short harvest season so you’ll never find them fresh commercially for sale. The only way to get your hands on them is to know someone with a tree or grow your own. You’ll also have to beat the birds to them, but as they are native plants, a thriving ecosystem is one that shares the harvest.

Garlic Scape Pesto makes for the absolute BEST bruschetta *chefs kiss*. This is the last jar from our 2025 harvest & scapes are SO close to being ready for harvest this year!

We keep it very simple.
- Scapes
- EVVO
- Basil
- Lemon juice
-Salt

That’s it! No real measurement, just all to taste. If we want to add anything else we do it when we go to use it. And we use a LOT of it, from pastas, bruschetta, as a marinade, in salad dressings, on pizza & even in grilled cheeses. 🧄
