These plants can be a nice supporting player in your mosquito plan, especially in pots near patios. 🦟 🌿
But real talk: mosquitoes are mostly repelled by rubbing the leaves (releasing oils) and by removing breeding spots. Best quick wins:
🚫 Dump standing water (saucers, buckets, clogged gutters) every few days
🪴 Keep fragrant herbs like basil/mint near where you sit
🌸 Add marigolds and lavender for pollinators too
Mint tip: plant it in a pot unless you want it everywhere. 😅

Canker rots? Most arborists don’t think of wood-decay fungi as a cause of cankers – defined simply as pathogens that kill the bark, cambium and outer xylem – of urban trees. In the case of canker rots, the fungi both decay wood and cause cankers.

Owls often raise these large clutches in hollow trees or abandoned nests built by hawks, crows, or ravens, sometimes even old barns. These hidden shelters protect entire broods long before most people know they exist.

A quiet strategy that keeps their growing families out of sight.

🧪 DIY Water Purification Filter: Simple and Effective

Clean water is essential for health and survival, especially in emergencies or outdoor situations. The image above demonstrates a homemade water purifying filter that can turn murky water into clean, drinkable water using natural materials. Here’s how it works, layer by layer:

🔝 What Goes In: Dirty or Cloudy Water
At the top, cloudy or dirty water (Eau Trouble) is poured into the funnel. This water may contain dirt, debris, and microorganisms.

🪨 1. Large Rocks
The first filtering layer consists of large rocks. These help trap bigger debris like leaves, insects, or twigs, starting the initial purification process.

🪨 2. Small Pebbles
The second layer includes small rocks or pebbles, which further remove medium-sized particles from the water.

🪨 3. Gravel
Next is a layer of gravel, which captures finer debris that made it through the first two layers. This helps prevent clogging in the lower filtration levels.

🔥 4. Charcoal
One of the most powerful filtering layers is activated charcoal (Charbon de bois). It removes chemicals, toxins, and bacteria while improving the taste and odor of the water.

🏖️ 5. Fine Sand
Beneath the charcoal, a layer of fine sand catches the smallest remaining particles, providing a final physical filtration.

🧻 6. Cotton or Fabric
At the base is a cotton cloth or fabric layer. This ensures that even the tiniest impurities are filtered before the water exits the system.

💧 What Comes Out: Clean Water
Once the water passes through all the layers, it emerges clear and clean (Eau Propre) into a container, ready for safe use.

✅ Why This Works
Each layer plays a specific role in purifying the water:
Physical filtration from rocks and sand.
Chemical absorption through charcoal.
Final polish from fabric or cotton.

⚠️ Important Note
While this filter improves water clarity and removes many contaminants, it may not eliminate all bacteria or viruses. For drinking purposes, it is recommended to boil the filtered water or use additional purification tablets when necessary.

🏕️ Perfect for:
Outdoor camping
Emergency preparedness
Educational science experiments
Off-grid living

With just simple materials, you can create an efficient, nature-inspired water filter and take a big step toward sustainable and safe water use.

The smallest wild place can hold the largest story.
A metre of unmown grass is enough
to feed, hatch, hide, migrate, and survive.
Leave edges — nature only needs margins.
