You never know what you’ll find when you start excavating. We were pretty sure this site was on top of fill, but never would have thought that the first 8 feet was mainly coal and coal ash. It makes sense that right near the old coal shute was where they dumped the used ash. That’s what you did in the 1800s.

The old ash and coal needed to be removed before a bed a crushed gravel was put down for something substantial for the addition to sit on. More to come!

Workshop: Know Your Options: New Materials for Your Old House

Join us for a workshop exploring which modern materials are appropriate for use on historic buildings and how they can be best used in ways that maintain historic character, but are also functional and sustainable. The event will start with a conversational show-and-tell about which modern materials have been recently approved in the Bristol Historic District and then take participants on a walking tour of their use on buildings right here in town. Vincent, who owns and runs the full service architectural studio Pacific-Visions Studio, will also talk about his time working on historic structures and what he has seen in the field.
