Mavuno Cowpea- A unique, promising Cowpea for hot climates.

Mavuno Cowpea is a vigorous, sprawling, groundcovering cultivar of Cowpea that has the unique trait of having a very low tendency to climb adjacent plants.
It shows great potential for its use as a groundcover or companion plant in hot climates in sustenance gardening and agroforesty schemes. It grows extremely rampant, and is highly tolerant of drought and heat. It has very high nitrogen fixation properties as evident by its abundant formation of symbiotic root nodules with N-fixing bacteria, and requires a very low threshold of soil fertility to get going well.

The pods are very susceptible to Cowpea curculio, a seed laying weevil pest that is prevalent in the SE US and other hot climates, but we have found it propagates easily through stem layering in a moist medium! Making it very easy to perpetually propagate this Cowpea.

Sovereign Edibles Nursery will begin propagating this plant for greater availability in the 2026 growing season! We want to get this out there for more to utilize and trial this amazing plant.

Cranberry Hibiscus (Hibiscus acetosella)
A top favorite green here for Taco Nights.

The greens have a sour/acid taste that compliments dishes well that would call for some lemon presence. They extremely high in anthocyanins which are strong antioxidants for the human body. It also interestingly contributes to a enhanced tolerance to drought and other adverse conditions the plant itself may face.

It is a highly productive, rapidly growing shrub that benefits from some pruning from the gardener to encourage a strong growth form. Left to it's own devices, it grows a single dominant stem in a lanky fashion.

We observe very low levels of herbaceous feeding on this plant from pests/ insects and herbivores.
Nematodes don't seem to be much of a problem for this species.

There are mixed reports on it's ability to bounce back from the severity of hardiness Zone 9A winter freezes. It appears it is marginal for overwintering in this area as a die-back perennial, but the plant readily grows from seeds and cuttings quickly enough to be very worthwhile to cultivate annually. We look forward to gaining more experience with it in this matter.

We also are looking forward to a fall seed crop to offer in 2025.

It's Jelly Melon harvest time!

-Also known as the African Horned Melon, or Kiwano Melon, Cucumis Metuliferus is a resilient member of the cucurbit family originating from Africa.
-They grow remarkably fast and rampant when spring-sown in the subtropics, with minimal inputs required.
-Perhaps the most impressive quality is a shelf life of up to a year unrefrigerated. Can be utilized like a cucumber unripe, and is a unique tasting fruit with a flavor that grows on you when ripe!

An abundant, reliable, underutilized crop for the subtropics.
