With this one sunny/chilly day we’re going to be kicking it in the garden. Though it is too early to ‘work your soil’, there are tons of other things we can do.
What’s on my to do list?

* Take cuttings of shrubs to propagate +
* Start building Secret Garden flower beds +
* amend soil in the greenhouse and water deeply
* Build new garden bed in main garden +
* start puzzling out drip irrigation plan
* start shoveling pile of wood chips to their new home +
* build nesting habitat for our 21 california quail that live in our trees
* Transplant lettuce under cold frame
* sow wildflower seeds on our back slope
* build annual flower bed and transplant all my pansies, borage and random over winter flowers into the pollinator bed.
* sow stratified milkweed sees on back bank +

That’s a lot and I know we won’t get it all done today but it is a good start.

2 days and counting for the seed library kick off on this Saturday between 1-3 at the Brookings Library. This year the tracking sheets will be easier with you listing the # of seed packets you’re taking not individual varieties.

Remember these events are also a great place for you to share seeds you’ve saved or even open seed packets. Just be sure to label the variety. We will have a separate table for sharing.

So it’s spring and we have snow here at sea level. Rest assured if you’re growing cabbage, kale, chard, broccoli, winter lettuce or in ground carrots, potatoes beets …. Basically winter crops they will be fine. They can endure snow and even a hard freeze. The trick is to let them be. Once they get snow on them they will go into suspended animation. Think cold storage. But I have covered my newly planted roses and begonias with a floating row cover and all the seedlings are in the shed. If you’re concerned about a tender shrub or newly planted sapling you can cover with floating row cover or a cotton sheet will do.
