As we continue exploring our B Corp Certification process, we're highlighting the next key impact area: Clients.

B Corps are evaluated on how they create value for the people they serve, including how they build trust, communicate transparently, and create long-term positive impact. At biota, every project is approached as a long-term partnership rooted in stewardship, collaboration, and shared values.

Through our Design → Build → Lifetime Care model, we guide every phase of the journey, from concept and construction to ongoing horticultural care. Our integrated team provides continuity, expertise, and thoughtful communication at every stage, ensuring landscapes continue to grow, evolve, and perform long after installation.

For our clients, this is more than an outdoor space. It's an enduring investment in a living system, thoughtfully stewarded for years to come.

Happy World Environment Day! 🌎 This day is a reminder of why we do what we do, and a chance to share some of what that actually looks like on the ground.

As a Certified B Corp landscaping company, sustainability isn't a feature we offer. It's how we operate. Here's a look at some of the environmental initiatives woven into every project and every workday at biota:

🌱Green mulch — we use low-growing plants to cover bare areas, hold moisture, and smother weeds. A living, ecological alternative to annual hardwood mulch applications.
🌱Pollinator habitat — from gabion walls and bug hotels to native plantings and prairie restoration, we create spaces where pollinators can thrive.
🌱Edible gardens — we help families design their own Victory Gardens so fresh produce is right outside the door all growing season.
🌱Solar-powered operations — our facility runs entirely on solar, including charging all of our battery-operated equipment. No emissions. No noise.
🌱Organic fertilizer from invasive carp — yes, really. A locally made, 100% organic slow-release fertilizer that turns an ecological problem into a soil health solution.
🌱Zero-waste sorting — all debris from project sites and our HQ is sorted for composting, recycling, or responsible disposal.
🌱Prairie & shoreline restoration — we restore native landscapes that support biodiversity, manage stormwater, and reconnect urban properties to the ecosystems around them.

Our team's submissions for photo of the week are in!

1. Members of our Build Team jumping for joy as their project is completed.
2. Lexie from our Horticulture Team with a friendly critter who may or may not have landed on her biota hat.
3. Lauren from our Build Team using a concrete needle vi****or (it oscillates rapidly, creating vibrations that help compact concrete by removing trapped air and moisture).

Our allium garden is officially in bloom ✨🐝 Bees love this member of the onion family, known for its nectar-rich blooms and pollinator-friendly flowers.

Today is National Bee Day, making it the perfect time to celebrate these essential pollinators. Bees help pollinate roughly 75% of flowering plants, and Minnesota is home to more than 500 native bee species.

We love seeing gardens designed not only for beauty, but for biodiversity too.

Featured in - there’s no greenwashing here. Our sustainability practices actually move the needle. From sourcing plants and hardscape materials locally to selecting native plants with the understanding that “native” is a moving target amid climate change.

biota Landscapes guides clients in selecting efficient and effective designs that will dazzle for decades.

“Even on the smallest scales, we can make an impact on global sustainability,” says Steve Modrow, Co-founder of biota Landscapes.

5,784 plants later, and the impact is just beginning! The native plantings installed across our projects last year are already sequestering up to 20,000 lbs of CO₂ annually, equivalent to avoiding more than 2,000 gallons of gasoline burned or roughly 24,000 miles driven in a passenger vehicle each year.

That is also comparable to the annual carbon uptake of approximately 5–10 acres of mature forest.

As these landscapes mature over the next 10–20 years, that number is projected to grow beyond 300,000 lbs of CO₂ captured annually, equivalent to removing roughly 30 passenger vehicles from the road each year or offsetting the electricity use of approximately 30–35 U.S. homes annually.

This is the long view of landscape design. Not just how a space looks when it is installed, but what it becomes over time.

Designing with intentional plant communities means working with systems that continue to give back. These landscapes capture carbon, rebuild soil structure, support pollinators and biodiversity, and help offset emissions associated with conventional landscape practices.

Transparency of our environmental impact is required as a Certified B Corp™. Stay tuned as we continue to reveal our impact across B Lab®'s five key areas.
