Earlier this month, Tess Newall, the decorative artist behind the Ottoline collection, laid a table for lunch, al fresco in East Sussex. Tomatoes, sun-warmed and glossy. In Uzès, in the South of France, there’s a workshop that’s been braiding clay by hand since 1802. Eighth generation now. The same porous local clay, the same slow method — hours of hand-braiding, then weeks of careful drying, before a single piece is fired.

This is the kind of craft that doesn’t scale. You can’t rush a month-long process, and you can’t outsource a technique that’s been passed hand to hand for over two hundred years. So we go find it — this workshop, a glassblower outside Venice, a linen weaver in Puglia — because the alternative is a fruit bowl that looks like this but isn’t actually made by anyone.

When likeminds come together, to eat and drink and pass the salt, something ephemeral feels captured — like lightning bugs in a jar. That was the feeling on an idyllic summer evening this past week in the Hamptons, when we gathered to celebrate the PORTA x Tess Newall Ottoline Collection around a table set exactly as it was intended: in good light, with better company.
 
True to the collection, art ran outside the canvas — stretching the length of the table in a tablecloth painted by Tess Newall’s own hand.
 
The night’s abundant produce came from , the beloved Amagansett nonprofit growing over 500 varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers just a few miles down the road. The meal itself came to life in the hands of , longtime collaborators whose cooking always finds the right note between effortless and exact. spritz caught the last amber light in the glass, dressed with dried citrus and rosemary, while STEL+MAR California Wines kept pouring long after the sun went down. A world of thanks to all.

New York in a heat wave does something strange to the ears. Every glass on the nightstand starts whispering like a conch shell. The AC drips become a metronome. Even the icebox starts to sound like an old Cadillac. The only way out is through so we’ve taken to carrying water everywhere, the way one tends a garden at dusk.
