KIBO Residences introduces a distinctly Brooklyn interpretation of Wabi-sabi, grounded not in style, but in revealing and working with what already exists.

In PHA, the existing brick wall remains the defining backdrop, set against a continuous white kitchen millwork wall that brings calm and order to the open living space. Dark bronze accents at the island top and cooktop niche add depth, creating a measured contrast between the raw texture of the brick and the precision of the new intervention. Above, a skylight draws natural light into the duplex stair. In the bathrooms, subtle off-white pencil tile adds texture through repetition rather than ornament.

The result is a penthouse shaped less by addition than by balance, allowing new interventions and existing character to remain equally present.

Inside the one-bedroom residence, that idea becomes quieter and more domestic. Warm wood tambour wraps the kitchen island, paired with tone-on-tone light grey cabinetry and countertop, while the existing brick wall is painted white to preserve its texture and soften the way light moves through the space.

Furniture, lighting, and artwork curated by add a more lived-in layer, bringing warmth and character to the restrained architectural palette. A study in how material, light, and everyday life can coexist with quiet clarity.

Within the typical one-bedroom residence, the material palette becomes quieter and more domestic. The kitchen island is wrapped in warm wood tambour, paired with tone-on-tone light grey cabinetry and countertop to create a restrained backdrop for everyday life.

The existing brick wall is painted white, preserving its texture while allowing light to move more softly through the living space. Furniture, lighting, and artwork curated by bring another layer of character, balancing the architectural restraint with a more lived-in sensibility.

KIBO Residences introduces a distinctly Brooklyn interpretation of Wabi-sabi, grounded not in style, but in revealing and working with what already exists.

The experience unfolds from the entry inward. An angled timber ceiling leads into the corridor, where site-specific artwork sits against the existing brick wall, keeping new interventions in dialogue with the building’s past.

Inside THA, the language continues through the kitchen and stair. A double-height timber wall extends toward the cellar, while the open stair connects the levels through light, proportion, and material continuity. The powder room carries the same restrained warmth into a smaller scale.

Each threshold becomes part of the residential experience, rather than simply a space in between.

The journey begins at the street and unfolds gradually inward. Layered timber screens soften the facade and filter the changing daylight, while the entry and corridor transition from the city into a quieter, more tactile interior. Inside unit THA, warm timber surfaces, restrained finishes, and carefully framed light extend this material language into the home.

KIBO Residences introduces a distinctly Brooklyn interpretation of Wabi Sabi, which grounded not in style, but in revealing and working with what already exists.

Our interpretation of Wabi Sabi begins at the street.
Layered timber screens bring warmth and rhythm to the existing Brooklyn facade, filtering light while creating moments of privacy, shadow, and depth. Rather than competing with the building’s original character, the new intervention works quietly alongside it—forming a threshold that feels grounded, tactile, and increasingly expressive as the light changes throughout the day.
