Thinking about a major kitchen remodel? 🛠️✨ It’s incredibly exciting, but the middle phases can look a little chaotic if you’ve never been through it!
Here are 4 critical things you should anticipate during the process:
1. The “Ugly” Phase (Demo & Framing)
Before things look pretty, they get stripped down. For this project, we tore out the old cabinetry and framed a massive new window opening. We also removed a non-structural wall to open the kitchen up to the dining area. Expect your house to look like a puzzle for a bit! 🧩
2. The Invisible Work (Utility Rough-Ins)
What lives behind the drywall matters the most. Once framing is done, the “rough-ins” begin—running all the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC lines. Notice the pipes and wires coming out of the subfloor? That’s exactly where the new island will live! ⚡💧
3. Visualizing the Footprint
A great contractor maps things out in the physical space. We’ve laid out the footprint of the new cabinetry and island directly on the floor. This ensures the workflow is perfect and clearances are correct before a single cabinet is installed.
4. Waiting on Inspections ⏳
Remodeling requires strict compliance. Once rough-ins are complete, everything pauses briefly for Rough Inspections (framing, electrical, plumbing). Passing these ensures your home is safe and up to code before drywall can go up.

From 1856 to the Colorado High Country: This home began as a lifelong dream—and an 1856 log cabin with real history. When the original builder relationship stalled, Bunn & Sons stepped in midstream to deliver a finished home worthy of the vision. The original Kentucky double-pen dogtrot cabin was deconstructed, restored, shipped, and rebuilt in Colorado, then thoughtfully integrated into a larger custom structure to support modern, full-time living. Inside, reclaimed barnwood, antique pieces, and hand-hewn old-growth logs meet high-performance comfort: heated floors, fireplaces, solar roof, and a fire suppression system—all on a 1.3-acre canyon lot at 9,500 ft with dramatic Continental Divide views.

This project was 100% unique and a lot of fun. We are grateful to have played a part in it!
