It’s been a pretty exciting month around here!
In 2022, we had an overwhelming amount of inquiries and referrals, far more than I anticipated when I hired Jake as my first full time employee. Many of you probably recall we were scheduled out for close to 2 months for most of the year, which is a good problem to have to deal with!
Because sustainability is an all-encompassing concept, I knew that going into this busy season it simply wasn’t going to be sustainable to operate at this pace with only two full time production employees, one of whom (me) is also doing the administrative side of the business. Luckily, our part time employee Alison asked to come on full time for the summer! Alison has been a huge help over the past two years as her schedule has allowed, and I couldn’t have been happier to have her around more often. As a woman owned and operated company, being able to train another female in many of the skills that have helped me become a more confident human is exciting.
We also brought on a fourth employee for the summer, Asher. He’s studying environmental science at UWM and brings a lot of enthusiasm and curiosity to the team. Both Asher and Alison started full time this week. I’m confident that having such a stellar crew will help Ursa Minor better service our clients.
Because I take training and safety very seriously, my goal is to offer as many opportunities as I can to train our summer staff in all aspects of the business, from tree biology and safe working practices to producing biochar to growing mushrooms. While tree and landscape work are often the bulk of what Ursa Minor does, our ultimate goal is to help everyone, our employees included, have a better understanding and appreciation for the natural world around us.
