✨Founder’s Day — celebrating St. Augustine, Florida’s 458th Anniversary.

On September 8, 1565, Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed on the shore of Seloy, a large Timucuan town that was situated just opposite what was to become St. Augustine inlet. Menendez was on a military mission to deal with a French incursion into Spain’s new world territory. With a fleet of seven ships and many soldiers, he was an imposing presence, and the Timucuans offered Menendez and his forces part of their village – thus establishing St. Augustine, the oldest continuous European settlement in the United States. 55 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and 42 years before the founding of Jamestown, the town of St. Augustine became a keystone in Spain’s New World network of settlements.

Founder’s Day Schedule of events on Saturday, September 9:

✨Saturday, September 9 — 1010 a.m. | Menendez and crew land at Mission Nombre de Dios grounds, FREE

✨11 a.m. | Catholic Mass at Rustic Altar on Mission grounds, FREE (bring a folding chair)

✨12 p.m. | Procession from Mission to Fountain of Youth, FREE

✨1 p.m. | Reenactment of first Thanksgiving meal at Fountain of Youth, St. Johns County residents and participants admitted FREE; Regular admission: $19.95 adults, $9.95 ages 6-12, FREE for 5 and under

✨1– 5 p.m. | Encampment and weapons demonstrations at Fountain of Youth, Regular admission rates above apply, FREE for St. Johns County residents.
