One of many fine finds from our friends at Creekside Nursery! Firecracker plant (Russelia sp) is great for pots or retaining walls where it can cascade over the sides. The best part is that these profuse blooms are a hummingbird magnet! Plant where you can best observe their antics!

Kindness to Wasps

We’re taught from a young age to fear the wasp. They interrupt playtime and picnics with their ferocious buzzing as they hover menacingly, with their smooth carapaces and stern faces. They threaten multiple stings and a mob assault if we disturb their nests, even if we do so unwittingly. Wasps are unforgiving, and so are we of them. While we welcome their cousins, bumblebees, honeybees, and the like, we overlook the benefits of having wasps in the garden. Wasps pull double duty as pollinators and protectors in the garden, they seek out and consume problem insects while pausing to feed on flower nectar. Of course we cannot abide a wasp nest where it can harm our families, so discourage them from building by knocking down small nests while they’re unguarded and the queen will move her brood to another spot. Consider leaving space for wasps in the garden, you will find that they solve many problems, often without our noticing or appreciation.

A few great tips for preparing your roses for summer from the wise folks down at Antique Rose Emporium!

☀️🌹 Preparing Your Roses for Summer 🌹☀️

Texas heat (and summer in general 😅) is on the way, which means now is the perfect time to help your roses get ready for the months ahead 🌿✨
A little prep now can make a big difference in how your roses perform through summer stress!

💧 Water deeply, not lightly
Roses prefer a good, deep soak to encourage stronger root systems. Watering deeply a few times a week, or as needed depending on your climate, soil conditions, etc. is often better than frequent shallow watering (always adjust for your climate + rainfall).

🌿 Mulch is your best friend
Add a few inches of mulch around the base of your roses to help regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, and reduce stress during extreme heat 🌞 We do NOT recommend mulching with rocks/gravel as it can dry out the soil and overheat your rose.

✂️ Light summer shaping only
Avoid heavy pruning as temperatures rise. Instead, lightly deadhead spent blooms and remove damaged growth to encourage continued health & performance long-term.

🌸 Feed wisely
As temperatures climb, consider transitioning toward gentler soil-supporting products or lower N-P-K fertilizers rather than pushing excessive new growth during extreme heat.

🐛 Keep an eye out for pests + fungal pressure
Summer can bring thrips, spider mites, blackspot, and stressed blooms. Early monitoring makes management much easier!

🌞 Don’t panic if blooms look different
Summer flowers are often smaller, lighter in color, or shorter-lived than spring flushes; this is completely normal! Your rose is conserving energy through the heat 💛

✨ Remember: roses are tougher than we give them credit for. A healthy rose may slow down in peak summer, but with a little care, it’ll be ready to shine again 🌹Check out our FAQ page for more rose care tips! https://www.antiqueroseemporium.com/pages/faqs
