A few great tips for preparing your roses for summer from the wise folks down at Antique Rose Emporium!
☀️🌹 Preparing Your Roses for Summer 🌹☀️
Texas heat (and summer in general 😅) is on the way, which means now is the perfect time to help your roses get ready for the months ahead 🌿✨
A little prep now can make a big difference in how your roses perform through summer stress!
💧 Water deeply, not lightly
Roses prefer a good, deep soak to encourage stronger root systems. Watering deeply a few times a week, or as needed depending on your climate, soil conditions, etc. is often better than frequent shallow watering (always adjust for your climate + rainfall).
🌿 Mulch is your best friend
Add a few inches of mulch around the base of your roses to help regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, and reduce stress during extreme heat 🌞 We do NOT recommend mulching with rocks/gravel as it can dry out the soil and overheat your rose.
✂️ Light summer shaping only
Avoid heavy pruning as temperatures rise. Instead, lightly deadhead spent blooms and remove damaged growth to encourage continued health & performance long-term.
🌸 Feed wisely
As temperatures climb, consider transitioning toward gentler soil-supporting products or lower N-P-K fertilizers rather than pushing excessive new growth during extreme heat.
🐛 Keep an eye out for pests + fungal pressure
Summer can bring thrips, spider mites, blackspot, and stressed blooms. Early monitoring makes management much easier!
🌞 Don’t panic if blooms look different
Summer flowers are often smaller, lighter in color, or shorter-lived than spring flushes; this is completely normal! Your rose is conserving energy through the heat 💛
✨ Remember: roses are tougher than we give them credit for. A healthy rose may slow down in peak summer, but with a little care, it’ll be ready to shine again 🌹Check out our FAQ page for more rose care tips! https://www.antiqueroseemporium.com/pages/faqs
